BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST are children of Abraham by faith(Galatians 3:7).
In our Anchor scripture, we are commanded to “look unto” our spiritual parents, Abraham and Sarah. A lot of times, we feel that this command is all about us emulating their tenacious walk of faith. Well, that’s true to an extent. But the command demands much more than that from us. We are to also emulate their lives as Lovebirds!
ABRAHAM AND SARAH AS LOVEBIRDS
Let’s look at some of the qualities of our spiritual parents as Love Birds
(1) UNITED AND INSEPARABLE TILL DEATH
In the face of prolonged bareness and heartbreaking childlessness, they cleaved to each other in love. Abraham never for a moment thought of another option for getting a child. He NEVER dabbled into extramarital affairs. He was contented with his beloved Sarah and cherished her till her death. We are to emulate their steadfast and unflagging love and loyalty to each other.
(2) HAPPY SUBMISSION
Sarah was illustriously submissive to Abraham. She believed in him as her Leader and submitted joyfully to his authority.
She never for once doubted nor rebelled against Abraham’s transactions with God. Her’s was a life of joyful obedience and compliance with whatever her husband communicated to her. She accorded Abraham great respect and reverently called him: “MY LORD”, even though they had the same father and she could have called a less dignifying name. Christian wives should all zealously emulate her and joyfully walk in her footsteps.
(3) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
One of the characteristics of Lovebirds is that they give attention to looking good for each other. In this regard, Sarah’s performance was simply excellent.
It’s noteworthy that when Abraham was called by God, Sarah was 65 years old. YES, 65 YEARS OLD! Yet at 65 years of age, she had a good dress sense; was beautiful and delectable. She didn’t let AGE make her look ancient, wizened and primitive. Rather she consciously took very good care of herself daily and always dressed well, so much so that Princes and Kings of nations drooled over her! Apparently she wasn’t dressing semi-nude yet she was strikingly attractive, showing that no woman need dress indecently before her beauty could find expression. Every Wife should emulate her.
(4) THEIR SEX LIFE AS COUPLE
The Bible no where discloses to us the Sex Life of the great patriarch and his Wife. But we can safely deduce from the promise of God to them, their faith based response to it and their unquenchable desire to have children
that they had a vibrant bedroom Life.
In Romans 4, we read of Abraham’s persevering faith that refused to accept hopelessness. Since he hoped to become the Father of many Nations as promised him by God, do you think he forsook sexual intimacy with his wife? No!!! He didn’t know when God would bring His Word of promise to pass until when he was 99 years old(Genesis 17:21). So, they were meticulously faithful to their Bedroom Life obligations until Isaac was born. Therefore, as Christians we are offsprings of a couple who had a stable and happy bedroom Life, even in old age and we will do well to emulate them in this regards as well.
The scripture confirms this quality of the righteous in the Psalms:
“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing”(Psalm 92:14). Since the Righteous have the capacity to bring forth fruit in old age, it means that they also have the potential for a vibrant and sound bedroom Life that lasts till death.
Since your spiritual Progenitors had a strong, enduring and virile love life that lasted till their death, you must not allow yourself to be conned by any one to believe that Sex Life diminishes from the age of forty!
