We live in a Universe created, owned and run by God. Every aspect of this vast creation was created by Him for His pleasure(Revelation 4:11) and that includes your Marriage.

For your Marriage to function properly and give Him pleasure, God has set forth laws one of which is what I choose to refer to as “The Laws of Hierarchy and Order”.

Our anchor scripture tells us that the Man is the HEAD of the Woman. And as we go further down in that chapter, it becomes very clear why the Man is the HEAD of the Woman and why the Woman is commanded to submit to the authority of her husband. No less than three reasons are set forth as why a Wife should be always in subjection to her husband:

(1) The Woman was CREATED FOR the Man(1 Corinthians 11:9; Genesis 2:18). It was the need in the life of the man that necessitated the creation of the woman. Therefore the woman was MADE FOR the Man.

(2) The Woman was CREATED FROM the man. Of the two, Man is the older creature as he existed before the woman made and it’s only proper for her as the younger to submit to the authority of her husband who is the Older gender.

(3) The woman is the GLORY OF THE MAN(1 Corinthians 11:7). The Woman with all her beauty and charms was given to man for his glory. That’s why people sometimes say: “Oh, you mean that delectable, chubby lady is that Carpenter’s wife? Wow, he has such a beautiful Wife.”

In Marriage therefore, there is a hierarchy of which the husband is THE HEAD. As Head, he’s the Leader and the Principal of his Wife.

However, Ephesians 5:23 tells us that his headship must be like the headship of Christ over the Church. Is Christ despotic, tyrannical, cruel, bossy, overbearing, treacherous or subjugating in His headship of the Church? No. A husband must not demonstrate any these wicked traits in his relationship with his wife.

Even though He’s the Head of the Church, Christ relates with the Church as a Friend, Intercessor, Brother and Advocate. He is meek and gentle in His relationship with every Believer. This is the brand of headship that Husbands are called to practice in marriage. They are called to lead their wives in the spirit of sacrificial love and exemplary servanthood.
