FROM OUR DEVOTIONAL PIECE for yesterday, we saw that Understanding gives a man THE ABILITY TO SEE CLEARLY, DIFFERENTLY AND BETTER THAN MOST.
Esau was a strong and brave hunter but lacked Understanding and so could not see nor understand the worth of his birthright and the great blessings that came with it. Of course, you know what he did with it. He carelessly sold it for a plate of food to Jacob a man with understanding.
Many marriages have collapsed not because the spouses were not God’s will for each other but because they placed little or no value on their union and so were careless with it; giving the devil the opportunity he earnestly sought to destroy it.
In our scripture passage for today we see Abigail, the Woman with Understanding, who had at this time become a widow and how she handled the great opportunity that came her way to remarry.
Abigail was a billionaire’s widow. She had lived the rich and luxurious life. She had touched money. Obviously, she was a smooth and supple skinned Beauty. Most widows in her shoes would scorn David’s seemingly laughable marriage proposal because it had a number of flaws. If nothing else, it was faulty because David ought to come in person and tell her his intentions and not send mere errand boys to deliver such an important message. Well, Abigail wouldn’t see it that way. Of course, she knew that David was a homeless fugitive on the run from his Master, King Saul; but Abigail could see in that roughly dressed runaway soldier the next King of Israel. Understanding made her see beyond David’s haggard exterior. It made her see beyond his apparent poverty and want. She saw beyond the fact that he came from a lowly parental background. She could see David’s great potentials and how they would blossom in the near future. And what did she do? She shamelessly threw herself at David’s feet. No pretending. No playing “hard to get.” She left the comfort of her cozy home to become David’s Wife in the wilderness! That’s the power of Understanding: it makes you a shameless Lover who’s ready to take the initiative in romance and affection irrespective of people’s contrary views. Understanding makes you radical in LOVE. Abigail was radical in her response to David’s proposal.
Dear Spouses, you also need to be radical in your relationship with each other. Go beyond the norm. See beyond the present state of your marriage. See beyond the present condition of your Mate.
One of the great qualities of LOVE is that it’s ever HOPEFUL. Love is an incurable optimist. It’s confident that no matter the present shabby state of things, they’ll straighten out; ending in beauty, glory and praise!
About twenty years ago, a housewife I know suddenly told her husband that she was done with their Marriage. All pleadings by the husband fell on deaf ears. She was determined to leave. Well, the husband finally allowed her have her way and so she left. But just after she stepped out of that home God began to rain his blessings on her husband. He had been using “Leggxus” but God suddenly moved him up to “Jeepxus”, if you understand what I mean. God bombarded him with open doors to travel to several foreign countries. His financial standing changed. And of course, the tidings of God’s blessings on her husband reached the Ex-Wife and she began pleading to return. But she had already been defiled by other men who had slept with her! Lack of Understanding was her undoing.
Beloved, walk in understanding. See beyond the present tattered and battered state of your spouse. Love them and highly esteem them. As you do, the two of you will walk hand in hand into the glorious future that flows with Milk and Honey; a blissful life of rest that God has prepared for you to enjoy.
