Understanding: A Major Key To Success In Marriage(Pt.4)

Scripture:
‘7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A YOUNG MAN VOID OF UNDERSTANDING, 8 Passing through the street near her corner; AND HE WENT THE WAY TO HER HOUSE, 9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: 10 AND, BEHOLD, THERE MET HIM A WOMAN WITH THE ATTIRE OF AN HARLOT, AND SUBTIL OF HEART. 11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: 12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) 13 SO SHE CAUGHT HIM, AND KISSED HIM, and with an impudent face said unto him,’
(Proverbs 7:7-13)

VERY MANY PEOPLE KNOW that God gave Solomon Wisdom but don’t know the very substance of his petition that moved God to give him wisdom. Solomon didn’t ask for wisdom, he asked for UNDERSTANDING:

“Give therefore unto thy servant an UNDERSTANDING heart to judge thy people, THAT I MAY DISCERN BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?”

Solomon earnestly wanted Understanding because it would give him the ability to differentiate between good and bad. In other words, Understanding makes you see beyond the surface; it gives you a fuller view of anything or situation. It enables you to recognize evil for what it truly is, no matter how popular and widely accepted it might be.

Understanding will make you see beyond the frailties
of your Mate. It will make you focus instead on their strengths and capacities; and help to develop them.

In our scripture passage for today, is a young whom we’re told is VOID OF UNDERSTANDING. He very probably was handsome but sadly lacked UNDERSTANDING. And because he lacked Understanding, he saw nothing wrong with patronizing Side Chicks. And so he headed to the house of one of such women in his town on this particular evening. And this is the unfortunate state of many Spouses today. They’re properly married but because they lack understanding they’re so blinded they see nothing wrong with infidelity or extramarital affairs. Their minds are so twisted and their conscience so calloused that they have become insensitive to the
hurt feelings, sighs, pains and the tears of their long-suffering Mate whose heart they’ve broken again and again. I know of one such man who went as far as to bring his girlfriend to his house while his wife was at home; and after sinning with her throughout the night still was so wicked as to tell his wife to set water in the bathroom for the girlfriend to have her morning bathe! This is the height of foolishness. A man who does this shows that he’s a walking Deadman. It’s only a matter of time and his judgement will come in form of prostrate cancer, erectile dysfunctions or an incurable sexually transmitted disease that would incapacitate him sexually; because this is God’s world where both men and women reap what they sow and there’s no respect of persons:

“BE NOT DECEIVED; GOD IS NOT MOCKED: FOR WHATSOEVER A MAN SOWETH, THAT SHALL HE ALSO REAP”(Galatians 6:7)

If you read the entire Proverbs Chapter 7, you’ll find that the young man’s search for pleasure ended in tragedy. And that’s what those who reject Understanding ultimately experience at the end of their adventures in Sin. They’re wasted by the devil and they regret deeply on their dying bed(Proverbs 5:1-14)

Sir/Ma, you need UNDERSTANDING to make a glorious success of your marital journey and not a shipwreck as many have.

Understanding is fundamental and more precious than Wisdom. Wisdom isn’t complete without it:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: AND WITH ALL THY GETTING GET UNDERSTANDING.”(Proverbs 4:7)

Understanding makes you see the wisdom of staying fervently faithful to your spouse as well as the folly and the dangers of infidelity.

Understanding helps you appreciate, value, esteem, love and place your spouse on a pedestal because that’s where they truly belong.

Finally, Understanding transforms you into a LOVER that your spouse will cherish endlessly and relish tirelessly.

When Jesus washed His disciple’s feet, He didn’t do it because they were too weary. No. They could wash their own feet at any given time. But He did it as an Act of Love.

There are several things your spouse can always do for themselves. Tonight, tell him/her the one you’ll like to do FOR him/her as a demonstration of YOUR LOVE. Do that thing for them tomorrow. Could be a manicure, a pedicure or some other “cure” services!
