THE MARRIAGE INSTITUTION HAS FIERCE ENEMIES and part of that Army of Foes are what I would prefer to call “THE ARMY OF SUBTLE AND DEADLY CREEPERS”.
Because this deadly grade of enemies exist to destroy your marriage, family and home, it becomes necessary for you as a Husband or Wife to be sober and vigilant; and keep watch over your partner; not by monitoring or suspecting them, but by a loving, caring and prayerful oversight. Check on them closely from time to time to ensure they’re not being deceived by some subtle creeper. We must not be like Adam whose Wife Eve was deceived by a subtle creeper right under his watch because he kept mute while it all happened.

Today, we have three anchor scriptures. In the first, we are instructed that because we live in the midst of deadly enemies, we must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Being wise as serpents implies having a measure of shrewdness. You must not be naive. You must not look at things and conclude that they’re as they appear: look further, be a little more investigative. Ensure you don’t fall for any tricks. Why? Because we live in the World: an enemy territory where all God’s earthly institutions are hated and targeted for extinction. One of those institutions is Marriage.

Our second anchor scripture tells us about a set of CREEPERS. These are men who profess to be saved and are comfortably in the Church. But they have turned the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ into a Licence for Immorality! They are at home with Sin and can do any manner of unrighteousness without qualms. Let me sight one instance of a real life operation of one of such men that happened sometime in the 1990s in the town where I lived.

A Minister of the Gospel was suddenly dismissed by the Church that engaged him. The Church also evicted him on that same day from the residence he was given. Now, when a Pastor of one the Pentecostal Churches in that town saw his situation, he felt pity for him and took him into his home. After some time, the Host Minister received a letter asking him to proceed immediately to another part of the State and start a Branch of the Church. Being a committed Servant of God, the Host Minister set out for the mission field and was there for two weeks leaving his Guest with his Wife and children. Long story short, he finished his task, prepared a report briskly and headed for the Headquarters of the Ministry at the State capital. Instead of being praised for a good work done, the Headquarters told him to his astonishment that they never sent him on such an assignment and that the letter he received was not from them. Dazed by what he heard he returned home only to find out that while he was enduring “hardness as a good soldier of Christ” on the Mission Field, his Guest was sleeping with his Wife on his matrimonial bed! He dragged the lascivious Pastor to the Minister’s Forum(name withheld) in the town seeking their intervention. The Minister’s Forum felt that taking the matter to the Police would make the bad news to spread and that would bring shame and disgrace to the Body of Christ in the locality. And since there really wasn’t much they could do, they Ordered the adulterous Preacher to leave the town immediately to which he agreed. But do you know what? When the Adulterous Preacher packed his bags and baggages to leave, the Host Minister’s Wife strangely packed out of her husband’s house and left with him! And so, the Good Samaritan Minister got his home broken because he showed kindness to “a Man of God.” This is just one instance.

Keep watch over your Marriage and your Spouse. Make sure you’re led by the Holy Spirit in all you do, including the kind of people you receive into your home.

Are we saying you should not be kind and hospitable? No. But be Wise as Serpents. Your marriage, home and family have no duplicate.
