IN THE CLOSING PARAGRAPH OF YESTERDAY’S DEVOTIONAL PIECE, we saw three simple definitions of Marriage: MARRIAGE IS A GLORIOUS CELEBRATION OF LOVE, AFFECTION AND ROMANCE. MARRIAGE IS A LOVE WORLD. MARRIAGE IS A LOVE AFFAIR.
For you and your spouse to make these definitions your practical daily experience as you live together, you must also choose to make them your matrimonial Creed. This is because as a Couple, you can’t rise above your marital beliefs.
When you look at the Couple in the Song of Solomon, you see a pair of Lovers who are intoxicated with each other. This is what God wants to see in your marriage. He wants you to be intoxicated with each other. And this begins with each of you realizing that you are THE STRONG WINE for your Spouse! The question now is: Is your Spouse intoxicated with you? How would they when you serve them only a teaspoon full of YOURSELF once in a long while instead of an abundance of YOU every day?
When at your work place, you are called a Business Man/Woman, Civil Servant, Physician, Professor, Preacher, etc. But when you get back home to your Spouse, know that YOU ARE A LOVER!!!
And just as you conscientiously perform your duties in the Office because you know that it’s the right thing to do, so also should you pour yourself into your duties as THE LOVER TO YOUR SPOUSE.
But what do we find in most marriages? It’s that spouses give their work at the Office as reasons why they should be slack in the performance of their LOVE DUTIES in Marriage.
While in the office, you worked with smiles. At the end of the work day, you even volunteered two extra hours to help some colleague with their unfinished work. But when you get home, you eat your meal with frowns and yawns. Your Partner innocently asks how your office day went and you’re irritated and throw a nasty answer at them. Meanwhile, everybody enjoyed you in the Office as the witty humorist who never lacks clean jokes. But at home with your Spouse, you’re a Lion/Lioness: ferocious and intimidating. And soon after your meal, you head for the bedroom and collapse into a deep sleep and are soon snoring. And of course, your Mate dare not wake you up to tell you that you’re snoring because you’ll pounce on them for breaking your sleep. And so you slumber until you finally wake up. “Ah, it’s already 5:45 AM! Wow, I can’t believe that I slept for so long. Well, my Dear; please, come and let’s do it briefly before these children begin to come here to greet us.” For peace to reign, your long-suffering Mate consents. And as usual, it’s hurriedly done in a cut-and-nail carpentry style. It’s all over in
less than two minutes. Whether your Partner enjoyed it or not isn’t your concern. For you, Sexual Intimacy is unimportant. And while your Spouse is teary eyed because of your insensitivity, you’re in the bathroom singing BLESSED ASSURANCE as you bathe to prepare for your “Darling Office” and your “Darling Co-workers” who cheer you on for being such a funny colleague. But THE ONE that contributes so much to your Life is weeping in their heart because you’re such a loveless and clueless matrimonial ignoramus who still doesn’t know that Marriage is a Love Affair and that Married Couples are Romantic and Sexual Lovers.
Dear Husband and Wife, memorize the definitions of Marriage that are in the first paragraph of this devotional. Make them your MATRIMONIAL CREED. Prayerfully endeavour to live by them.
