DURING MY SECONDARY SCHOOL days, OSIBISA, a Ghanaian pop music group based in Europe came out with a thrilling hit Single that got us dancing real good in Nigeria. The Single was titled: FIRE. The opening lyrics says: “WHEN YOU WERE A BABY, YOUR MAMA TOLD NOT TO PLAY WITH FIRE…
FIRE WILL BURN YOU!”
We’ve all been through childhood and are now parents and grandparents; and we all know that those opening lyrics of the Osibisa Song are true. Every loving parent who sees their young child wide-eyed and excited by the sight of the flames of Fire is quick to warn the little one in a loud and stern voice to keep away from the attractive but dangerous flames.
Today, we’re considering the GREAT FIRE that’s so close to us and which God our Heavenly Father as a loving Parent has loudly warned us against. Unfortunately, some who don’t want to obey Him have chosen to rename the Fire. The Fire we’re talking about is ADULTERY.
God calls Adultery FIRE! Some now call it FUN, AFFAIR, CHEATING, FLING, PLAYING THE FIELD, EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY, etc.
But does changing the name of a thing make it any different from what it is? Does relabeling Fire stop it’s power to raze down and to consume whatever it comes upon? Of course not.
God calls Adultery FIRE and Fire it is and Fire it always will be:
“CAN A MAN TAKE FIRE IN HIS BOSOM, AND HIS CLOTHES NOT BE BURNED? CAN ONE GO UPON HOT COALS, AND HIS FEET NOT BE BURNED? SO HE THAT GOETH TO HIS NEIGHBOUR’S WIFE! WHOSOEVER TOUCHETH HER SHALL NOT BE INNOCENT”.(Prov.6:27-29).
It’s important for all Spouses to understand the scope of ADULTERY.
Once you’re married, sexual activities with ANY OTHER PERSON apart your legitimate husband/wife is ADULTERY. The person you sin with may be unmarried but since YOU ARE MARRIED, sexual involvement with them is Adultery because you’ve broken your marriage covenant with your Spouse, deeply betrayed them, and have made yourself one flesh with a strange man/woman.
Any man or woman outside your marriage is a mighty, raging Fire.
Embracing them is embracing a mighty inferno(fire), and you’ll not just be burned, you’ll be charred and left scarred for life! Yes, your physical body may not be burned but your life, personality, integrity, public image, resources and so much more will be left in ruins.
Seeking Sex outside your marriage easily gives you away as lacking in wisdom and circumspection. Why? Because common sense should tell you that Men and Women are basically all the same when it comes to Sexual capacity and taste, irrespective of individual differences in appearance.
To believe that someone else outside your marriage is more entertaining than your spouse is a sign that you’ve been brainwashed and deluded by the devil and his demons!
Adultery leads to Wounds and Dishonour(Prov.6:33). It leads to the destruction of the Soul (Prov.6:32). It opens you up to sexually transmitted diseases of diverse types.
In 1997, a Servant of God told me of a man who was given to infidelity. He had a Wife at home but had this penchant for sleeping around. Then one day, something took him to a medical laboratory where he was tested and found to be HIV positive. He was angry and full of fury. And right there in the hospital, he vowed to sell his car and use the proceeds to sleep with as many women as possible so he’d spread the disease to others since he was infected with HIV by a woman. But would that solve his great problem? No!
What are the consequences of sleeping with women/men outside your Marriage?
(1) YOU WILL BE BURNED. According to Proverbs 6:27 your body/health(signified by clothes)will go up in flames. Meaning they’ll suffer destruction. Your “feet” will be burnt, which means that your speed in life will be drastically reduced.
(2) YOU’LL LOSE YOUR INNOCENCE.
From that time forth your integrity will be doubted and questioned. You’ll be under scrutiny. Seeing you with members of the opposite Sex will get people suspecting what you’re doing.
(3) YOU’LL BE WOUNDED.
Extramarital Affairs leads to deep wounds and scars. A former Lecturer of mine was scarred in the face by a woman who poured boiling water on him because he was wooing her even though he knew that she was married. It’s a miracle how his two eyes escaped unhurt.
(4) IT STAMPS IT’S VICTIMS WITH INDELIBLE REPROACHES
It’s brings the Man/Woman concerned to great disrepute and reproach that just won’t go. God will definitely forgive the transgression once there’s repentance but the damage it does to the image of the person are permanent. A good example is King David. Till this day, men have not forgotten his Adultery with Uriah’s Wife even though God has for long forgiven him.
(5) ETERNAL DAMNATION IN THE LAKE OF FIRE.
Those who embrace the Fire called Adultery have enrolled their names to spend eternity in the lake of Fire. If they however repent and believe on Jesus Christ, they’ll be saved and their Sins forgiven.
So, the next time the devil sneaks to your side and tells you to commit Adultery, be quick to resist him and he will flee from you.
Don’t let the devil make a fool of you by getting you to agree to go into Adultery.
Don’t let Anger provoke you into sleeping around.
Don’t let wealth deceive you to commit Adultery. Some were faithful to their Mate during their days of struggling. But when God gave them money, they felt they can afford to enjoy “variety and diversity”. They are so foolish they don’t know that Water is the same everywhere irrespective of the shape or size of the bottle. In Proverbs 5:15-17 God calls Sexual Intimacy WATER. Don’t be fooled. Understand that the WATER in your Marriage is of no lower quality than the ones outside it. Instead, the WATER in your marriage is sparklingly clean and pure, while the ones outside are polluted. Be contented with your Spouse!
