OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE PASSAGE PRESENTS one of the best known records of the temptation to Adultery. It all began with the wife of Potiphar CASTING LUSTFUL GLANCES at Joseph.
Many claim that the temptation to commit Adultery is “too strong and unsurmountable”. Well, that’s not true, Sir/Ma. There are not only one or two steps to overcoming the temptation to Adultery, there are several.
Jesus said, if your right eye causes you to sin, PLUCK IT OUT AND THROW IT FAR AWAY FROM YOU.(Matthew 5:39-30) Many still wonder if He meant that we should get such an eye surgically removed. No, He didn’t mean any such. There are several ways you could “remove” your eye and it will no longer behold the object of temptation. One of them is to turn your neck and look in another direction. Another is to close your eyes! Another is to stand up and walk away from the presence of the person you are being tempted to have an affair with!
The devil isn’t as powerful as we make him out to be so many times. He isn’t “God”, never has been and never will be.
In any case, what constitutes Temptation? It’s the suggestion and enticement to do what you know is wrong. The devil never goes beyond “suggestions and enticement” and never has the power to do so. He cannot force you to do what you make up your mind not to. So, Sin is always committed with the involvement of the human will and consent.
Now, Joseph lived in an era when there was no Bible. Yet, he had enough spiritual understanding and moral integrity to know that it wasn’t right for him to keep quiet at the satanic request of his Master’s unfaithful wife. He knew he had the freedom and the power to object to what the devil was asking through the lips of Mrs Potiphar. He therefore SPOKE OUT giving her the detailed response we have in the last verse of our anchor passage.
He let the unfaithful Madam know that he had great power in her household which, however, excluded the freedom to touch her. He also let her know that it was, “GREAT WICKEDNESS AND SIN AGAINST GOD” for him to consent to her dark demands. With those words, he won the victory that day and the woman let him be.
The temptation to commit Adultery is NEVER stronger than other temptations. It is like the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness during his 40 days and nights fast. How did Jesus tackle the enemy and defeat him? By SPEAKING OUT, just like Joseph did. HE USED HIS MOUTH! When tempted to cheat, to be unfaithful to your spouse, USE YOUR MOUTH to declare your rejection of the devil’s poisonous “offer”!
Now, let’s consider this: was Mrs Potiphar not attractive and alluring in the sight of Joseph? Of course, she was. She was the wife of highly placed Egyptian and so must have been well-fed, very beautiful, full-bodied and sexy. But JOSEPH REFUSED TO LET HIS OWN EYES AND HER ATTRACTIVENESS CONTROL HIS MIND AND MAKE A DECISION FOR HIM. He countered her tempting words with GODLY WORDS OF REFUSAL AND DECLARATION OF TRUTH just like Jesus countered the words of Satan with the Word of God thousands of years after.
The last time she tempted him, she changed her tactics: she didn’t only speak, she acted by holding Joseph. Joseph also changed his resistance tactics: He countered her new tempting move with ACTIONS. He suddenly left his dress which she’d firmly held and ran off.
One other thing that gave Joseph victory was HIS ROCK-SOLID LOVE, LOYALTY AND COMMITMENT TO GOD. He was purposed NOT TO SIN AGAINST GOD!
