BIBLICALLY APPROVED GROUNDS FOR REMARRIAGE (PT. 1)

Scripture:
‘BUT IF THE UNBELIEVING DEPART, LET HIM DEPART. A BROTHER OR A SISTER IS NOT UNDER BONDAGE IN SUCH CASES: but God hath called us to peace.’
(1 CORINTHIANS 7:15)

FORTY THREE YEARS AGO,
I bought a beautiful book on Marriage. In the Book, I read something that troubled me. It was the story of a christian gentleman who left home for Theological Seminary just three months after his Wedding, only to hear that his new Wife had deserted him and moved in with another man! In his bewilderment, he rushed home only meet his house shut and his wife gone; just as he had been told.

When he gently confronted her, she casually told him that she just realized that she didn’t love him! And that was all.

What frightened me at the time was the Author’s grim position: He believed that the young man had no prospects of remarriage. He had to remain celibate all the rest of his life. That is, until that lady died! How so ominous!
I was only two years old in the Lord at the time and apparently knew little or nothing about christian marriage. Very many years later, when I began teaching Marriage by God’s divine calling, the Lord made me understand that, that Author’s conclusion was wrong.

When we look at God’s Word, we find that in this Seminarian’s particular circumstances, he’s not supposed to suffer all the rest of his life for the Sins of a treacherous wife. There’s a clear provision in God’s Word to extricate him from the old marriage that was already invalidated. We find that provision in the next paragraph.

(1) “BUT IF THE UNBELIEVING DEPART, LET HIM DEPART. A BROTHER OR A SISTER IS NOT UNDER BONDAGE IN SUCH CASES: but God hath called us to peace.” (1 Corinthians 7: 15)
The verse above tells us explicitly that: when the UNSAVED PARTNER in a Marriage ABANDONS OR DESERTS the union, the believing partner is free from the binding covenant of that Marriage. The believing partner is not in BONDAGE to the vows, oaths, and obligations of that union anymore. So, looking at this Scripture, that Seminarian was as free as the breeze to find new love and remarry.

(2) This Seminarian had another scripturally sound ground to remarry. Let’s look at it:

“BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, THAT WHOSOEVER SHALL PUT AWAY HIS WIFE, SAVING FOR THE CAUSE OF FORNICATION, CAUSETH HER TO COMMIT ADULTERY” (Matt. 5:32). Fornication in that verse means SEXUAL IMMORALITY; and covers all forms sexual sins that violate the marriage covenant. That verse gives sexual immorality as a reason for the innocent Spouse to quit his or her Marriage and remarry.

In the case of the Seminarian, his Wife didn’t only desert him, she swiftly followed it up with moving in with another man, which is blatant Adultery!
What did the Lord Jesus say in the last verse we quoted? He declared that a Spouse could divorce on the ground of ADULTERY by his or her Marriage Partner. So in the circumstances of this Seminarian, he had two solid grounds to put the old Marriage behind him and remarry.

I’ve heard of a God-fearing and soundly born again husband whose wife threatened to leave. She even went on to tell him that since he was born again, she knew that once she left, he would never be able to remarry. And she eventually fulfilled her threat and forsook the marriage. Well, she was ignorant of the provision of 1 Corinthians 7: 15.
All that dear Brother need do is to prayerfully seek God’s face for divine guidance on who, when and how to remarry and God would back him up.

Dear Reader, if you have been DESERTED by your marriage Partner, I’ve got good news for you: YOU ARE FREE TO REMARRY.

And if yours is a Marriage in which your Mate is committing adultery and you have concrete proof or evidence, you are also free to leave that union according to the Word of Christ in Matthew 19: 9.
One reason why you should leave a Spouse that’s unfaithful and committing adultery is because if you don’t, they might infect you with HIV/AIDS and some other deadly sexually transmitted diseases(STD) that are incurable and negatively life altering. It has happened to many, DON’T BE THE NEXT VICTIM.

πŸ·πŸ— TAKE-HOME LESSON: DESERTION AND SEXUAL IMMORALITY ARE SOME OF THE BIBLICALLY APPROVED GROUNDS FOR FREEDOM TO REMARRY.
