YOUR MARRIAGE AND THE GOVERNMENT

Scripture:
‘THESE THINGS I HAVE SPOKEN UNTO YOU, THAT IN ME YE MIGHT HAVE PEACE. IN THE WORLD YE SHALL HAVE TRIBULATION: BUT BE OF GOOD CHEER; I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD’
(JOHN 16: 33)

OVER ONE MONTH AGO, I ATTENDED a well attended Christian Couples’ Dinner in a beautiful hotel. In the course of the meeting,
participants were asked to write and forward on a piece of paper what they individually thought were responsible for the disappearance of romantic love in Marriages.
Among the submissions was one that got everyone laughing.
The Writer said that the cause of the disappearance of romantic love in marriages is the THE GOVERNMENT. We all instantly knew what he meant. He meant the present high cost of living, the poor state of the economy, etc. But is it really true that bad and unfriendly government is the cause of unromantic marriages? No; it’s definitely not.

There have been bad and unfriendly governments down through the ages.
In the time of Abraham and Sarah, there were bad governments and rulers who institutionalized evil as obtained in the entire land of Canaan(Leviticus 18), yet Abraham and Sarah had a holy and robust marriage. Right in the midst of the highly immoral and perverted Canaanites, Abraham
loved Sarah intensely and she on her part submitted to his authority joyfully calling him, LORD. There were despotic and totalitarian kings in those days and that’s why Pharaoh commanded Sarah to be seized by force and brought for him.

There were bad governments in the days of Isaac and Rebecca, yet they had a lovey-dovey marriage which King Abimelech saw the proof thereof as he chanced on the godly couple “sporting” in broad daylight with liberty!

There were bad governments in the world when Apostle Paul wrote all the New Testament Commandments and Instructions on Marriage. The Romans were in power and they were ruthless. Their soldiers compelled husbands to render forced services just as Simon of Cyrene the father of Rufus, a married man, being forced to carry the cross of Christ, etc. Yet christian couples in their multiplied thousands joyfully embraced and practiced the New Testament laws on Marriage as delivered to the Church by Apostles Paul and Peter, despite the hostile government that unleashed unprecedented persecution on them.

In our anchor scripture for today, Jesus made it abundantly clear that we, as Christians, live in a hostile world where tribulation is certain. In other words, as so long as we are here in this present world, we are not to expect improved, better and humane regimes. No.
Living down here on this terrestrial planet means facing tribulations which manifests in form of economic hardships, insurgencies, oppositions, hatred, insecurities, miscarriage of justice, etc.

But our anchor scripture doesn’t only tell us that we would face tribulations. There’s a very happy and delightsome aspect of it. Jesus tells us that IN HIM, WE’LL HAVE PEACE! He didn’t stop there but went on to say that we should BE OF GOOD CHEER BECAUSE HE HAS ALREADY OVERCOME THE WORLD!

What does “IN ME YE MIGHT HAVE PEACE” mean? It means: even though we would encounter hardships in the divers forms from the world, we have a Castle of Peace inside the Person of Christ as we abide in Him and in His Word!

The world may do it’s worst to make the economy and life generally harsh and unbearable for us, but the truth is: the world is a toothless bulldog. Jesus Christ has long since castrated it and removed all it’s teeth. It barks but cannot bite the Elects of God!

It means then that we can enjoy completely happy, blissful, serene and romantic marriages in this present world just as much as we can live practical holy lives in it. We are in the world but not of the world and we have been given God’s grace to practice every thing God has commanded us to do in our marriages, homes and family lives.

So, the next time you hear anyone say that hardship and the bad state of the economy is affecting their practice of biblical marriage, take an exemption: you don’t belong to that group. You have been given the Grace of God (Titus 2:11-12), the indwelling presence and power of the Holy Spirit and the bright light of the Word of God to enable you live a consistently happy and romantic married life with your Spouse; irrespective of who is in power in your nation or the country where you live in the diaspora.

πŸ·πŸ— TAKE-HOME LESSON: DON’T LET THE WORLD DICTATE THE STATE OF YOUR MARRIAGE. LET THE WORD OF GOD, HIS GRACE AND THE PRESENCE AND POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT DICTATE YOUR LOVE LIVES AS A COUPLE.

πŸ’•β€οΈ TONIGHT’S ONE FLESH ASSIGNMENT IN THE BEDROOM
Are there marital practices you’ve reduced or completely dropped because of the harsh state of your nation’s economy?
Please, list them.
Then endeavour to resume doing everyone of them. It won’t be bad to begin today.
