OUR FIRST SCRIPTURE PASSAGE PRESENTS THE STORY OF A WEALTHY COUPLE IN SHUNEM, whose name the Bible has chosen to conceal. They were financially and materially blessed.
One day, the wife of this unnamed man invited a passerby for a meal in their home. The passerby was Prophet Elisha. He promptly declined her invitation. However, because of her persistence, he accepted her hospitality. Much later, her husband came into the picture as they joined hands and built the Prophet a house.
Because of their services to God in caring for His Servant, God met a longstanding need in their lives: God blessed them with a baby boy!
It’s noteworthy that this couple must have been members of a local Synagogue in Shunem but their view of the scope for serving God was not narrow; rather it was wide. It transcended their local religious community. Similarly, you and your Spouse need to have a broadened view of your scope of divine service. Have a global view of the scope of serving Christ.
Many couples are so well blessed they could serve God much better than they do at the moment. For instance, there are couples who are so financially comfortable they could sponsor an evangelistic crusade every year but have never done so because their idea of serving God has not grown beyond giving tithes and offerings faithfully on Sundays.
Dear Christian Couple, our second scripture passage is a message you’ll do well to take to heart.
You probably haven’t been taught that the wealth and other resources God has graciously placed in your hands are not only for buying cars and building houses. God wants you to know that every kobo, penny, cedi or dime in your possession came from Him and He wants you to, alongside using them for yourself and your family, also remember to invest them in His work on Earth and in the lives of the less privileged. That’s the great message of our second anchor scripture (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
You probably are not aware of this: Many of the evils and destructions on earth are not accidental. They are financially sponsored by very rich individuals. All the Terrorist groups in the world, without exception, are sponsored by wealthy people who have chosen to serve Satan. Many of the false religions that are leading millions astray are similarly sustained.
As Believers in Jesus Christ, you and your Spouse should have a different view of how to use the financial resources and wealth that God has given to you. They are His Talents or divine capital entrusted to your care for usage in expanding the frontiers of His kingdom on earth.
You and your Spouse can use your wealth to serve God in several ways including any of the following:
(1) SOUL WINNING Invest in sponsoring the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the salvation of lost souls. In this regards, don’t be denominational. There are many anointed and sincere preachers in and outside your denomination whom you could team up with to effectively win souls for Christ. Prayerfully identify one and team up with them to fish souls into God’s kingdom.
(2) MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS Sponsor committed, well gifted and talented born again Songwriters and cause the Gospel to spread through Songs. Why? Because human beings naturally love music; irrespective of their religion. Furthermore, an anointed song produced from a good and professional recording Studio could literally reach millions of lives and homes SEVERAL TIMES EVERYDAY. People may become tired of a recorded sermon after hearing it thrice but not music. They could place a Song on repeat mode and hear it ten times without being tired!
(3) BUILD UP MARRIAGES
Sponsor Marriage Ministries. One of the areas the devil is attacking relentlessly is Marriages. That’s why we have so many divorces, broken homes, bleeding hearts and delinquent children. Look for a Marriage Ministry(like the one that produces the LOVEBIRDS’ DEVOTIONAL you’re reading now!) and back them up financially. With such a backup, Marriage Seminars and Summits will be held in diverse places. In these programmes couples will be equipped with marital knowledge, wisdom and understanding. And marriages on the verge of breaking up will be restored.
(4) MERCY MINISTRY TO THE POOR
Another area you could invest your God-given wealth is in feeding, clothing, and helping the poor. This includes: widows, orphans, beggars, the homeless destitutes, etc. You needn’t go far to find them because they’re right there in your locality or neighborhood.
Many of the things that are destroying the nations today, especially the youths, are sponsored. Beauty Pageants, Big Brother Naija, and several other unprofitable social activities that have neither earthly nor eternal values are sponsored by individuals and corporate entities that have no fear of God. You and your Spouse can make a difference! Choose to go beyond just giving offerings and tithes on Sundays. Choose to lay your treasures in heaven above by sponsoring God’s work in diverse ways while you’re still alive. LET YOUR WEALTH COUNT FOR GOD! And as you do, God will reward you here on Earth and much, much, more in Eternity.
