AS A SERVANT OF GOD SENT TO TEACH MARRIAGE, I ENDLESSLY cherish the Song of Solomon. It’s a precious scriptural resource that depicts the beauty of pure and monogamous love.
It’s on record that in the second century, one of the greatest Jewish teachers and mystic, Rabbi Akiba Ben Joseph, said this about the Song of Solomon:
“The whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the Scriptures are holy, but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies”.
With this book enjoying such a high regard and acclamation, you would expect it’s Author to stay true to the great and noble concepts of fidelity and monogamous marriage which he believed. But we all know that later, King Solomon completely deviated and became a large scale Polygamist; the type of which no one had ever seen. The scripture says of him:
“And he had SEVEN HUNDRED WIVES, princesses, and THREE HUNDRED CONCUBINES: and his wives turned away his heart.” (1 Kings 11:3 KJV)
Exactly what happened? Where and when did it all begin? We may not have the answer to these questions but one thing is sure, we can learn from Solomon’s fatal fall from the lofty place of true love as given in Eden to the completely carnal life of living with an extra large harem of one thousand women.
There is no form of fall or deviation from good that’s honourable or commendable. As the scripture tells us in Hebrews 13: 4a, “Marriage is honourable in all…” To abide in this honour, one must do the following:
(1) TAKE HEED AND CONSCIOUSLY WATCH AGAINST DEVIATION
In 1 Corinthians 10 we’re sternly commanded:
“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”(1 Corinthians 10: 12)
If you’re sure that your love and romance with your spouse hasn’t gone sour or stale but is still steamy and sweet, then don’t be careless. Don’t think it’s cheap. Take heed or else you will lose it.
Just in case you don’t know, it’s not only Solomon that backslided from a good love life. Many of your neighbours, colleagues at work, church members, etc, once had blooming love lives that was so admirable until they became careless and then they strayed away into infidelity or nominal married lifestyle. So please, TAKE HEED!
(2) CONSTANTLY WATCH YOUR HEART. YES, WATCH YOUR OWN HEART!
In taking heed to avoid marital backsliding, the first thing to watch is your heart. And that’s why God tells us:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4: 23)
Your heart is the abode of your love for your Mate. It’s where your love for them actually started.
Solomon’s fall from the ideals of pure love must have begun with the straying of his heart. He is the Writer of the Book of Proverbs that overflows with divine wisdom, yet the possession of such lofty wisdom could not restrain him from falling into excessive polygamy. It’s not that wisdom is impotent or weak in restraining a man from error; it’s just that you will ultimately do what YOUR HEART earnestly chooses.
You must watch your heart and ensure it doesn’t stray from your Mate because of their mistakes and imperfections.
Watch your heart and ensure that it’s not begining to rove after that handsome and very amiable man you met recently in the banking hall or the beautiful and sultry lady you sat with during your flight from Abuja to Lagos. The heart must be watched or else it will lead you astray. God created the heart but His Word has this to say about the heart:
“THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS, AND DESPERATELY WICKED: WHO CAN KNOW IT ?” (Jeremiah 17: 9)
(3) FIRMLY AND CONTINUALLY CLEAVE TO YOUR MATE ON ALL LEVELS
If you don’t want to backslide from a good and happy monogamous marriage, then you must take cleaving to your Mate very seriously EVERYDAY. I personally believe in this point SO MUCH.
Cleave to your Spouse mentally, romantically, “technologically”,
and sexually!!!! This keeps you glued to each other such that there’ll be no gap or space for the enemy to come between you to push you assunder. In cleaving to your Spouse, you’re placing them as a seal upon your heart and arm(Song 8: 6a)
(4) BE SOBER AND VIGILANT AGAINST THE DEVIL
Don’t wait to be told that the devil hates your marriage because he does 100%; and will do anything and go to any length to break it up. And one of the things he’d do is to get you to trivialize what you have.
Your Spouse is a good thing, nay, a precious gift handed you lovingly by God. Don’t take them for granted. Don’t assume that you did them a favour in marrying them because that’s untrue. They’re exceedingly precious but because God loves you, He affectionately gave them to you. So highly esteem them with all humility.
Don’t give the devil the chance he seeks to snatch them from you.
(5) READ ABOUT MARRIAGE EVERYDAY
This point may at first seem irrelevant or unserious but it’s not.

Remember what God told Joshua as the new leader of Israel after the death of Moses? He told him to always have the Book of the Law “in his mouth” and meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). Why? It would enable him to “observe and to do” the commandments of that Book.
Forgetfulness of Biblical precepts and principles on Marriage has led some Spouses into costly errors. And when the deed is already done, they shed tears: “How come I forgot this thing we were taught at the Marriage Summit early last year? I remember we were taught not to move too close to the opposite sex. That anyone could snap a picture with an Android phone to scandalize us. Now my pictures are on the internet for what I didn’t do!”
