EVERY GOOD THING THAT GOD HAS GRACIOUSLY given you requires regular maintenance. This includes your Marriage.
Like professionally baked Wedding Cakes, good Marriages have standard tastes, flavour and fragrance. If you’re a good Baker, just a whiff of the “fragrance” of a poorly baked Cake tells you everything: It’s the product of a learner. You don’t need to taste it to know.
Similarly, if you enjoyed a newly made soup the very evening it was cooked and went to bed delighted by it’s rich taste and the amount of solid meat and fish “loaded” into it, you’d naturally look forward to relishing it the next evening. If by the time it’s served the next evening it’s already gone sour, you might not even need to taste it to know that the taste has changed. As you open the cover of the soup dish, the sour smell immediately tells you everything: the lazy housemaid has ruined the sumptuous soup by not to boiling it on time in the morning.
There are things that are maintained by heating. There are also those that are maintained by freezing. There are yet others that are best maintained by being buried some feet beneath the surface of the earth. But your marriage isn’t maintained in any of these ways.
For your marriage to retain it’s first taste, first flavour and first fragrance, you’d need to ensure that ALL it’s basic components are always intact and in full measures. That’s the secret.
Many neglect some of the basic marital concepts and practices they gave attention to in the first year of their union and later wonder why their romance has gone sour and the “first taste” of the marriage vanished.
When, as Marriage Teachers we repeatedly drum into your ears the idea of living as married lovers, being romantic, living the love-dovey life with your spouse and giving much attention to sexual intimacy in your marriage; it’s not that we’re carnal christians, worldly folks or even “sensual and not having the Spirit” as some may suppose. We simply teach biblical truths that will make your marriage ever thrilling; such that you and your spouse would never have any inclinations towards infidelity.
When you take a thorough study of God’s Word on Marriage, you’ll find that there is no marital practice that’s meant to be dropped after some years. None!
When Adam first saw Eve, he recognized her and spoke pleasant words to her. At no stage in your marriage would RECOGNITION and PLEASANT WORDS become unnecessary. When you no longer recognize your Mate as the flesh of your flesh, and the bone of your bones, your marriage immediately begins a speedy decline. When you feel it’s no longer important to speak respectfully(pleasant words) to your Mate and begin to talk to them rudely, get ready for heated arguments that will soon degenerate to full blown fracas. And when this happens, don’t hold your head in your hands and say, “Oh, Lord; how did we get here? What has gone wrong? Cherub my sweet wife is growing more wild everyday! Have those wicked people in the village begun attacking my marriage also?” Friend, no person is attacking your marriage. You simply hewed down important pillars that uphold your marriage. Don’t be surprised that it’s now bent.
When you read Proverbs 5: 15-19, you’ll find that sexual intimacy, romance, etc should be constant features of your marriage. They’re not to be stopped or reduced because you’re now a “Big Man” or “Big Woman” who works in the Presidential Villa of your country or at the United Nations Headquarters. No. They are covenant rights that you and your Mate are to minister to each other regularly, constantly and faithfully.
God’s perfect will is that your Marriage gets stronger and sweeter with each new day. Make that your goal and it will be your reality.
