CELEBRATING YOUR DIFFERENCES AND PECULIARITIES IN MARRIAGE

Scripture:
‘SO GOD CREATED MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE, IN THE IMAGE OF GOD CREATED HE HIM; MALE AND FEMALE CREATED HE HIM.’
(GENESIS 1: 27)

GOD IS A CREATOR WHO TAKES PLEASURE IN DIVERSITY AND VARIETY. For instance, when He spoke the Earth’s vegetation into existence in Genesis 1: 11-12 , He could have made miles upon miles of carpet grass with no trees and shrubs any where in sight. But you don’t need anyone to tell you that such “one-type” vegetation wouldn’t have been good considering the need for the sustainance of humanity, birds, animals and all the creeping creatures. So God’s speaking forth diverse kinds of grasses, trees, plants and weeds into existence has provided humanity and the entire animal world thousands of species of crops, fruits, roots and tubers on which to feed and grow. It also provides wood with which we build our homes, temples, cathedrals, ships, furnitures, beds, etc. From all these, we can easily see the importance and benefits of variety and diversity.

Just when He was about instituting Marriage, God knew that creating another Man as Adam’s companion wasn’t going to fulfill the promise of a HELPER He’d made in Genesis 2: 18. The Helper needed to be DIFFERENT and that in many ways. However, the difference between her and her husband was going to be COMPLEMENTARY.In other words, their differences was for the purpose of enhancing, boosting and emphasizing each other’s
gifts, talents, strengths and abilities; helping to bring out the very best of each of them. Therefore, Spouses needn’t fight one another for being different. It’s through your differences that your beauty, strength, distinctness and uniqueness as a couple shine forth better.

Even in our physical BODIES the various parts are not the same, right? Since you were born have you ever complained about why your ears are not like your tongue? Or why your private parts are not such as you could flaunt them and show them off like you do your face? You accept them as they are as well as where God has chosen to position them in your body. You don’t ever wish that your eyes were in your armpits. You trust God’s wisdom in setting them where they are. That’s exactly how you should accept your Spouse and the attributes in their lives that you may not understand or like for now. Your not liking them doesn’t mean you are right. Your dislike for them only show your present ignorance and immaturity which would change as you open your heart to God’s Word and Truth.

Other than character and behavioural flaws, there are so many good things in the life of your Mate that you will do well to leave alone and not strive to change.

For instance, if your Mate is an introvert who loves staying home most of the time, you will do well to let them be. That’s their nature. Trying to change them is uncalled for. Just enjoy the dissimilarity between the two of you! Or if your Mate is left-handed, you needn’t complain about it or mock them or make them feel guilty for what’s not their making. Do you know why? It’s because God deliberately created them that way because it gives Him pleasure for them to be left handed(Revelation 4:11; Judges 3:15). You should take pleasure in what gives GOD pleasure and not act against them in any contrary way.

Even in the Body of Christ, Christian differ from each other. Hear what the Bible says:

“5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

6 HAVING THEN GIFTS DIFFERING ACCORDING TO THE GRACE THAT IS GIVEN TO US, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith” (Romans 12: 5-6)

The Lord goes further to let us know that each person in Christ is distinctly different just as obtains in our physical Bodies:

“17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”(1 Corinthians 12: 17-18)

So, in the Body of Christ some are EAR, others are NOSE. Yet others are MOUTH, LEGS, THE HEART, THE LUNGS, etc. We each have our distinct positions calling and assignment but together we work in harmony to fullfil the mission of Christ on Earth and earnestly seek to finish it.

So also in the Marriage Body which is called ONE FLESH. The husband is different from the wife and vice versa. God saw your differences before gifting you to each other and He knows that with those differences, you are stronger as a team to fulfill His purpose for bringing you together.

In conclusion, be reminded of the the clichรฉ that says: “OPPOSITES ATTRACT.” You need to realize that it’s the differences in your respective lives that drew you or attracted you to each other. When you see more differences after becoming married delight in them as much as you delighted in the few that drew together to say, “I DO!” Appreciate and celebrate them for they make you unique, better and stronger as a Love Team.
