WHEN THE WINE RAN OUT DURING THE MARRIAGE FEAST in Cana of Galilee and Mary spoke to Jesus, remember what happened? Jesus did not visibly consent but she nonetheless told the Servants:
“WHATSOEVER HE TELLS YOU TO DO, DO IT.”
Jesus told the Servants to fill the water pots with water. Now, what had filling the water pots with water got to do with the critical need for wine? Jesus’ orders sounded completely odd because water never produces wine. But the Servants sheepishly obeyed Him without asking questions, without seeking a bit of explanation or some clarifications. The outcome is A TESTIMONY that still thrills us till this very moment. The water was miraculously turned to Wine! Wine of the most distinct and unequalled quality and taste! That’s what happens when we “foolishly obey” divine commands.
If you’re truly tired of the unrests, squabbles, chaos, confusion, turmoil, discord, disunity and all the “civil wars” that have characterized your marriage over the years, then it’s time to “foolishly” give attention to what God is saying in our anchor scripture for today!! You can’t afford more of the unrests. Who knows, you may not survive them. To continue in that grim path may lead to a dangerous degeneration of your relationship that might in turn result in some tragic outcomes just as our anchor Scripture warns:
“BUT IF YE BITE AND DEVOUR ONE ANOTHER, TAKE HEED THAT YE BE NOT CONSUMED ONE OF ANOTHER.” (Galatians 5:15)
If you don’t turn from biting and devouring each other, you may ultimately consume each other as the verse above says. That’s exactly what happened to the married couples whose tragic stories are below.
COUPLE (A) : This particular couple had been having matrimonial conflicts and one of the bones of contention was accusation and counter accusation of infidelity against each other. At a point the husband got the alleged sexual partner of his wife arrested, detained and later released. After a while, the cycle of accusation and counter accusation started all over again and on one particular night the wife used a knife and cut off her husband’s manhood, castrating him. You don’t need to be told that very severe and speedy bleeding would be result, do you? The castrated husband seeing what the wife had done to him got hold of a cutlass and matchetted her down. And the two fell on the ground, bleeding very profusely and eventually died in the pool of their own blood. There barely was anything neighbours and passerbys could do to save them.
The question is: how did two good-looking people who fell in love, married each other and were blessed with children degenerate and transmogrified into haters of one another? How did the desire for sexual intimacy with others creep into their hearts when, according to Scriptures, the volume of sexual pleasure available in every marriage is inexhaustible and far beyond any couples’ consumption capacity? The problem started a little here and a little there. And gradually Lovers turned into cruel enemies of one another to the extent that the wife would have the heart to castrate the father of her children and the husband matchetting his wife to death.
COUPLE (B): The second story is that of a highly talented and well loved female gospel music minister who died on April 8, 2022.
For years she had patiently endured cruel battering from her husband, a Pastor. The last straw that broke the camel’s back was his allegedly beating her and kicking her in the chest. She eventually succumbed to death from the harrowing pounding and punching.
Dear Married Couples, please listen!!! You didn’t marry to become a Murderer, did you? Neither did you marry to get butchered to death by your Spouse.
The volume of news on incidents of matrimonial violence in increasing by the day. This is, sincerely speaking, very alarming.
If you know that your marriage is bedeviled with discord, mistrust, suspicion and other signals of future anarchy, please PAUSE, SIT DOWN TOGETHER AND HAVE A PRAYERFUL AND MEDITATIVE TIME OF PONDERING ON OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY. It says:
“But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.”(Galatians 5: 15)
Marriage is A LOVE AFFAIR as you must have experienced during your honeymoon. In those days, as you can vividly remember, you never imagined “biting” each other let alone doing it. Not to talk of having the cruel heart of DEVOURING EACH OTHER! But over the years your love for each other has leaked off so much so that you no longer have concern or empathy for one another anymore. And you now “bite” each other and even “devour” one another.
“Biting” each other isn’t physical biting with teeth, don’t forget. It’s anything you do that inflicts pain on your spouse physically or emotionally, directly or indirectly; and that grieve or traumatize them. One of them is Adultery, which many of you now merely call CHEATING. Adultery is never cheating. It’s deeper and by far more evil and more heinous; which is why it was punishable by DEATH in the Old Testament era.
Today, arise, humble yourselves before GOD and repent of your “biting” one another. If you don’t, Satan will harden your hearts and bring you to the point where you will consume each other.
To consume each other is to do what will terminate your lives or render you completely useless on earth. If you think that the tragedy that befell others can’t be your lot, you’re mistaken. If you go on biting and devouring each other, it will happen to you too. For whatsoever a man sows, that shall he surely reap (Galatians 6:7 )
Look at the couples whose stories are cited above. The first consumed each other by murdering one another while the couple in the last story: one murdered the other and has ended up in Prison.
Be very careful. Check your incessant anger!
Desist from picking up a bottle when you have a misunderstanding because you may end up using it one day.
Control yourself!!!!
Above all, if you’re not yet born again, ask JESUS CHRIST to come into your heart and save you and He surely will.
BEWARE LEST YOU CONSUME EACH OTHER!!!
