IT’S WONDERFUL TO BE MARRIED AS YOU ARE TODAY. This is one of the quests, dreams and yearnings of your heart that God has graciously granted you.
However, good as being married is, there is the more important aspect which is:
STAYING MARRIED TO THE END; because that’s where the real beauty and glory of marriage lies (Ecclesiastes 7:8).
For instance, God bypassed many of her age mates and blessed one Miss “ZYX” with a husband. Actually, “ZYX” wasn’t by any means a candidate for any beauty contest. She’s just a typical plain Jane. Yet, God graciously blessed her with a civil servant as husband. But even before she clocked three months in the marriage, she began bullying her man. Things were such that they fought from time to time and each time they did, she’d beat him silly and their fellow tenants would gather to watch the free wrestling match with glee as she’d end up laying him on the floor, flat on his back. She was in Life’s first Institution and “House of Honour” called Marriage (Hebrews 13: 4a) but had no UNDERSTANDING to appreciate the precious gifts of A HUSBAND AND HOME! Consequently, she spent the strength God gave her for household management, cooking, laundry and housewifery on punching her husband and thereby behaving like a wild beast just as our anchor scripture rightly tells us:
“MAN THAT IS IN HONOUR AND UNDERSTANDETH NOT IS LIKE THE BEASTS THAT PERISH” (Psalm 49:20; KJV)
“A MAN IN HONOR, AND YET WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING, IS LIKE THE ANIMALS THAT PERISH.” (Psalm 49: 20; MEV)
In a world where it’s common knowledge that there are by far more Spinsters than there are eligible Bachelors, she had the fortune of having a husband in a monogamous marriage all her own and what could she do with him? Rough
handle and disgrace him openly again and again; with no thoughts about possible consequences of her wild conduct. She probably thought she’d found the place to show off her wrestling skills for which she was known among her peers during her growing up years in the village.
Well, before long the husband evaluated his circumstances and took the hard decision of sending her away. And he did. It was at this time that she began begging and pleading for pardon and reinstatement, but it was too late! The man couldn’t take any more of the humiliation and shame; and so went on to take another wife!
When the husband took a new wife, it became clear to her that her fate was sealed. She couldn’t return to her father’s house either. Perhaps, the question: “WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY WHEN I RETURN TO MY FATHER’S HOUSE?” haunted her day and night.
God’s Word says: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: AND WITH ALL THY GETTING GET UNDERSTANDING”(Proverbs 4:7).This means that even though Wisdom is very important, very precious and a great asset; yet, you can’t go far without having UNDERSTANDING alongside!
UNDERSTANDING makes you see things from God’s point of view; enabling you to know the value and worth of the blessings in your life, especially YOUR SPOUSE; and the fact that you may NEVER have another one quite like them, should you make the costly mistake of losing them.
When Adam first saw Eve, he exclaimed: “THIS IS NOW BONE OF MY BONES OF MY BONES AND THE FLESH OF MY FLESH”(Gen. 2:23). That was a demonstration of UNDERSTANDING!
Your Spouse isn’t just another human being. No! They’re YOUR VERY BONES, FLESH, AND BLOOD!
God’s will is for both of you to stay married until when He personally permits death to bring your union to an end. This being so, it’s your duty to practically demonstrate wisdom, patience, tenacity, resilience, endurance, maturity, love, generosity, kindness, tolerance, forgiveness, tenderheartedness, forbearance and every other necessary virtue to ensure that you stay with your Partner through all the changing seasons, circumstances and situations of life until you’re both old and have seen your children all married and settled in their respective homes. This is the bigger and fuller picture of marriage. Not just a flamboyant, high society wedding that’s broadcast on all national television stations but crashes after ten short years.
When a wife has UNDERSTANDING, she wholeheartedly sees her husband as the GREATEST MAN on Earth! And indeed, he truly is, as far as she’s concerned. He’s higher to her than her nation’s President. This is UNDERSTANDING and this is actually the reality.
Similarly, a husband who has UNDERSTANDING sees his Wife as the GREATEST WOMAN on the face of the Earth. None is as important in his life as she is except God. He’d see and treat her as a very important personality. This is UNDERSTANDING.
UNDERSTANDING helps you to NEVER take your Mate for granted. UNDERSTANDING makes you know and steadfastly believe that: “A Bird In Hand Is More Precious Than Ten In The Bush”. Meaning that your God-given husband or wife is by far more dear to you than all the people of the opposite sex the devil is trying so hard to use as bait to lure you into Sin.
UNDERSTANDING will make you hate cheating, infidelity, adultery, extramarital affairs or whatever other names they’re called.
UNDERSTANDING will make you know that there’s nothing in extramarital affairs that’s not abundantly in your marriage ALREADY; and in abundant quantity and of higher quality.
UNDERSTANDING will make you cherish and celebrate your Spouse today and always; knowing that whatever may be their present weaknesses, GOD will, with time, transform them and make them by far more glorious than they are at the moment!
Dearly Beloved, you’ll do well to heed the counsel of scripture that says: “AND WITH ALL THY GETTING, GET UNDERSTANDING”It’s an asset that will enable you retain your marriage and home and never lose them as many have.
