JANUARY 1, 1863, PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN signed the Emancipation Proclamation by which all the millions of Negro slaves in the United States of America became free.
One hundred years later, precisely on August 28, 1963, Rev’d Martin Luther King Jnr speaking glowingly about President Abraham Lincoln and his epoch making document of freedom said:
“Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity”.
But do you know that after that decree was released, a certain wicked slave owner in a part of America’s hinterlands refused to let his slaves go free? He still kept them in bondage and suffering; in defiance of the new law since he was sure they didn’t know what the President had done for them. And so they continued in cruel bondage and servitude.
One day, luck ran out for blackhearted and vile slave master as his victims met a freed slave on their way home from the day’s hard labours. The freed slave stopped and asked why they were still in chains when all of America knew that slavery was abolished and now unlawful? They told him they’d never heard anything like that. Seeing their visible ignorance as written on their astonished faces, he fished out his copy of the Emancipation Proclamation that he’d safely tucked away in one of his pockets and read it out loud to them. It was all like a dream to them. They passionately pleaded with him to give them his copy of the Proclamation document which he gladly did assuring them that he would easily get himself another copy.
With the precious document of freedom in their hands, their gait, demeanor and comportment changed. They walked into their master’s compound with swagger. Seeing their changed faces and unfamiliar bold walking steps, their wicked owner not having any idea of what was up sharply rebuked them to move faster. They thundered back at him and told him to keep quiet. They went further to let him know that they now knew that they were freemen. They waved the copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and told him boldly that he had no rights to keep them in bondage a minute more. Their display of their new knowledge of their freedom sealed the lips of the wicked man. He dared not stand up to stop them from leaving.
Like that wicked man, the devil is keeping many married couples in one form of captivity or the other because they’re ignorant of the TRUTH. And that’s why God laments in the Scriptures:
“MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE”(Hosea 4: 6a)
“THEREFORE MY PEOPLE ARE GONE INTO CAPTIVITY, BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE”(Isaiah 5:13a)
Lack of knowledge kept those slaves serving their cruel and heartless Master until God mercifully sent knowledge their way in form of the vital document that was given to them by another freed slave.
Do you know that the document for your enjoyment of a continually victorious marriage is available today? It may surprise you to know that this document is right in your house and that you touch it every day but have not given attention to the specific parts that would give you the knowledge you need on Marriage.
Dearly Beloved, every scripture on marriage is your power for total success and victory in the aspect of marriage it speaks about. That scripture verse contains POWER. However, what will lead to the release of the inherent powers in that living word of is RAW OBEDIENCE by you! Let me give you an example.
When the slaves were given a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation what did they do? First, they received it. Secondly, they believed it. Thirdly, because they believed it and knew for sure that their day of freedom had finally come, they were happy and excited beyond words. Their joy was so much it showed on their faces, in their changed walking style and in their body language. Fourthly, they didn’t come timidly into the compound to negotiate with the wicked man that had held them illegally when they were actually freed by the Laws of America. They came minded to confront the wicked man. When he rebuked them for walking differently they roared at him and waved the document in his face, so to say. They spoke with audacity and told him to his face that he could not hold them in bonds any further. And that was it. They left his house unchallenged and walked into freedom forever!
Please, note that they didn’t get the document and hide it. They promptly acted on it without delay and that same day, they became practically free. THEIR ACTION released a power that their Master could not withstand or resist!
Similarly, you must act on the commands and instructions of God on Marriage. As you act on God’s Word, there’s a release of power in your favour.
For instance, God commands husbands to love their wives supremely as Christ loved the Church and gave her His very life. When a husband walks in obedience to that command and does risky things when the need calls for such for the well-being of his wife, power is released to touch the heart of the wife to esteem her husband, love him more than before, help her to believe him much more than ever before, etc. This is just as the death of Christ on the Cross has released the power of conviction of the Love of Christ into the heart of every Believer. With that singular act that Jesus performed on our behalf, we’re forever persuaded of His eternal love for us.
When a wife chooses to submit herself to her husband in all things as God commands, she’s not being foolish as rebellious wives think. She’s instead walking in power. God will release His power to back her up and to create a big room for her in her husband’s heart and life.
In the Gospel of John it’s recorded:
“31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8: 31-32)
In these verses, we are taught that the knowledge of the Truth leads to freedom. We need to know that the knowledge here referred is the knowledge that goes with obedient action.
Every command of God on Marriage is full of Life and Light. As you obey them by acting on them, you’ll see their glorious fruits.
Before we draw the curtain, let’s consider what would have happened if those cheated slaves had not believed and acted on the document they’d received. They would have continued in slavery, perhaps, till the day of their death.
But their FAITH IN THE DOCUMENT AND THEIR PROMPT ACTION ON IT led to their freedom!!
ACT on each and everyone of God’s Word on Marriage and you will see your union grow sweeter and sweeter each new day and your romance ever getting richer and stronger!
