LIFE IS SHORT AND MARRIAGE IS A PRIVILEGE. It’s a blessing to be legitimately One-Flesh with someone of the opposite sex, live under the same roof and love each other till when the privilege will be finally withdrawn at Death.
A lot of times, however, our idea about expressing love to our Mate is just wrong. We feel it’s to wait until “one day” when we’d be able to gift them a Rolls-Royce, a private jet or perhaps, something even bigger. Truly, it’s great to give such amazing gifts. But Sir/Ma, what will enrich your matrimony and make a positive difference in the life of your Spouse doesn’t necessarily have to be costly. Why? Because Love is all about MEETING NEEDS in the life of each other. It’s about bringing relief, joy, help and smiles to the face of that one special person who has left all others and chosen to be yours for life.
Our anchor scripture passage for today tells a touching story. Ruth, the young Moabitess widow and daughter-in-law of Naomi had gone to the farm of a rich man to glean. She was given some refreshment which, I believe, must have been sumptuous and richly tasty; since the owner of the big farm was both famous and wealthy. After eating the rich food to an extent, Ruth chose to reserve some of it for her Mother-in-law! She could have eaten everything and her Mother-in-law wouldn’t have known. But you know what? She was thoughtful of the older woman? Her thoughts were probably something like: “What a rich meal! So tasty! How I wish Mama were here to taste this. Well, I won’t eat all. I’ll keep some and take home to her. Let her partake of it also.” And so she brought the much she’d reserved to Naomi.
How many times have you gone to important social ceremonies or functions where you were served a full chicken and you ate everything with no thoughts for your wife at home? How about the bottle of wine and the fruit juice pack? You drank all with no thoughts for the lady you call “My Heart”, “My Mwa-Mwa-Mwa”, etc.
One of the powerful ways of renewing and strengthening your Marriage is by SHARING. Yes, it’s true they gave it to you alone. Yes, it’s true that everyone is eating theirs at the function. But you can make the choice of asking those serving the dishes to kindly help package yours, so you’d take it home. Yes, take it home and share with your Spouse. It speaks volumes. Your Mate may not express any surprise or appreciation but they’ll hear something deep down in their heart that confirm your love for them.
The early Church in Jerusalem grew exponentially within a very short time. But do you know what? It wasn’t only because of the Anointing. That growth was to a great extent because of the life of caring and sharing that was prevalent in the Church in those days. Because of it, the poor amongst them found not just Everlasting Life but practical love and succour. Many of them came out of the stranglehold of poverty and despair.
Stop waiting for that big financial windfall. Use what you have and start from where you are to shower care on each other and to share your blessings with one another; always remembering that Marriage is a privilege and that the “licence” would be withdrawn, once your time on Earth is up.
