TILL THIS DAY, AS MANY AS READ THE ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE OF THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN IN PROVERBS 31 don’t only doff their hats for her but are in awe of her impeccable and inspiring personality!
But unknown to most, one of the secrets of her towering life is that she possessed one of the spiritual treasures of this present life. That treasure is: THE FEAR OF GOD! That’s why the second to the last verse of the chapter that chronicles her story tells us:
“FAVOUR IS DECEITFUL, AND BEAUTY IS VAIN: BUT A WOMAN THAT FEARETH THE LORD, SHE SHALL BE PRAISED.”(Proverbs 31:30)
The fear of God made the virtuous woman prodigious, eminent and praiseworthy in her marriage, home, family, city and land.
In our anchor scripture for today, we see another married person who had the fear of God at work in his life and that Man is Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When Joseph realized that Mary was pregnant, he didn’t burst out in anger and call her names or even resort to reporting the matter to her parents or his own family. All he wanted was to secretly back out of the marriage arrangements, even though everything was already set in concrete. Because he was a just young man who feared God, he decided to put Mary away in such a manner that her life would not be endangered. The fear of God RESTRAINED him from exposing her on one hand and it CONSTRAINED him to do everything within his means to protect her!
The fear of God is synonymous with the Love of God because if you truly love God, you will also fear Him. And when you love and fear Him, you will also love your Spouse and refrain from doing whatever will hurt, sadden, burden, humiliate or frustrate them.
When Joseph was fiercely tempted by Potiphar’s wife, it was the fear of God that RESTRAINED him from yielding and CONSTRAINED him to flee from her; proving that when a man or woman indeed fears God they will be faithful to their marriage vows and not commit Adultery, no matter the pressure.
The fear of the Lord grants us divine WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING:
“AND UNTO MAN HE SAID, BEHOLD, THE FEAR OF THE LORD, THAT IS WISDOM; AND TO DEPART FROM EVIL IS UNDERSTANDING.”(Job 28:28)
When you have the fear of the Lord, you will walk in wisdom and understanding; and understanding will make you hate Sin and depart from it, resulting in a holy life.
As already observed, the fear of God is synonymous with the Love of God.
When you walk in the fear of God you’re at the same time walking in Love and because you’re walking in love, you will not hurt your Spouse for the Scripture says:
“LOVE WORKETH NO ILL TO HIS NEIGHBOUR: THEREFORE LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW.”(Romans 13:10)
The reason why some Spouses are still going into infidelity, even though they have a healthy and full-bodied Spouse at home, is because they lack the fear of God in their lives.
When you see a man who beats up his wife often and on and oppresses her, that’s a fellow who’s empty of the virtue called the Fear of the Lord.
Similarly, when you see a housewife who is rebellious and contentious to her husband, know that she’s deficient of the fear of God irrespective of what title they’ve given her in church.
The man or woman who fears God has a conscience 🫀 🫀 🫀 🫀 🫀 that’s alive, alert and sensitive to the mind and feelings of God.
When you have the fear of God, the consciousness of pleasing Him will be uppermost in your heart. And because you’re minded to please, you’re also ready to go to any length to obey all He has commanded you concerning your Spouse and your marriage. And obedience to them makes your marriage and home a tranquil and serene colony of Heaven.
Dear Spouses, individually check your hearts ❤ ❤❤ to see how much of the fear of God is in you. This is because, ultimately, your possession of the fear of God or your lack of it will determine whether you’ll spend eternity in Heaven or Hell! It’s written:
“LET US HEAR THE CONCUSSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER: FEAR GOD , AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS : FOR THIS IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN.
FOR GOD SHALL BRING EVERY WORK INTO JUDGEMENT, WITH EVERY SECRET THING, WHETHER IT BE GOOD OR WHETHER IT BE EVIL.”(Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)
