DURING A MARRIAGE SEMINAR SOME YEARS AGO, a housewife told of how her Mother-in-law visited her home.
During the visit, the old lady noted that her Son always bathed with his wife. Alarmed, she called him aside one day and reprimanded him. “Chai, Santana”, said the old lady, “What you’re doing is unheard of my Son. You mean, you don’t know our tradition anymore? How would you stoop so low as to be bathing with your wife and letting her see you in broad daylight? It’s not done. This is not part of our culture. Chai, you’re cheapening yourself before her. And before long, she’ll no longer respect you!”
Perhaps, you have also heard of the Mother who sternly warned her daughter a few days to her Wedding to be “careful” how much of herself she would give to her husband. “Duchess, mind how you sleep with your husband; are you hearing me? You’re a wife, don’t let him see you as a spoilt girl or a prostitute. One time a week is enough. That way, he’ll hold you in high esteem. Don’t cheapen yourself to him in the name of Love. Do you hear me? Don’t go and disgrace our family there by being loose. Be disciplined. Women from our tribe are known to be disciplined. Sleeping with him once a week is enough! Even if he’s a He-goat, let him know that you’re not a Goat.”
Dearly Beloved, the Marriage institution has many enemies and one of them is ungodly counsel from unregenerated persons. When you see marriages falling apart: left, right and center, one of the things that cause their collapse is unscriptural counsel received from men and women such as we’ve sited above.
But what says the Scripture? “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.”(Matthew 4: 4B)
Every aspect of life, marriage inclusive, should be lived according to the dictates of God’s Word.
Now, let’s probe the “counsels” above under the light of God’s Word.
(1) BATHING WITH YOUR WIFE DOESN’T REDUCE YOU AS A MAN!
Adam and Eve weren’t only naked in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2: 25), they also bathed together regularly in the beautiful Rivers of Eden. They never bathed separately since they were close companions. Besides, they were not ashamed of each other.
Beloved, there’s no law in Scripture that forbids Spouses bathing together. None!
Are there any benefits in spouses bathing together? Of course, there are. Here are a few.
Firstly, bathing together gives them the advantage of seeing each other in their “Birthday Suits” which is the best and original dress. Secondly, seeing each other’s full nakedness often and on, kills curiosity or the tendency to look at other women or men lustfully.
Bathing together gives Spouses the advantage of scrubbing each other’s back thoroughly; a thing most Spouses can’t do when bathing alone. It holds other advantages too.
However, bathing together isn’t compulsory in Marriage! If one partner objects to it, the willing partner should not insist.
And if their accomodation or home isn’t suitable for such, it’s better they refrain from the practice.
(2) “DON’T BE LOOSE TO YOUR HUSBAND”, “DON’T CHEAPEN YOURSELF BEFORE YOUR HUSBAND.”
These are two dangerous “advise” that have ruined many marriages. We shall look at them one after the other.
(A)”DON’T BE LOOSE TO YOUR HUSBAND”
In marriage, there’s nothing like looseness on the part of the wife or lust on the part of the husband because both of them have become one flesh and there’s nothing like immorality between them. In marriage, the husband’s body belongs to the wife and hers is his(1 Corinthians 7:4). Each of them is free to freely touch, see and enjoy the other’s body.
In marriage, therefore, if the wife allows her husband see her nakedness twelve times a day and sleep with her as many times, it’s no mark of looseness on her part because she and her husband are one flesh and her body belongs to her husband(1 Corinthians 7:4).
(B) “DON’T CHEAPEN YOURSELF BEFORE YOUR HUSBAND”.
This is a dangerous “motherly advise” that has ruined the marriage of many innocent daughters.
Because of this so-called “advise”, many vivacious and beautiful young wives played “hard to get” a.k.a. “Shakara” for their husbands until they lost him. The man got frustrated with the wife’s endless acts of “pretend for long before you consent” and went into infidelity or married a second wife.
Please, listen attentively wives. There’s no husband any where on earth who will count his wife as cheap because she easily or consistently consents to his request for sex. Rather, such husbands count themselves blessed with a good wife. You’re free to believe or disbelieve what I have just said, but it’s perfectly true.
God’s Word commands wives to render sexual ministry to their husbands constantly and vice versa, except when they’re on a Fast. Obedience to God’s command to submit yourself to your husband sexually and meet his need doesn’t in anyway cheapen you. Rather, it lifts you higher in the estimation of your dear husband.
Spouses, please heed the words of our anchor scripture for today. Beware of the counsel of the ungodly. It doesn’t matter if the ungodly is your Mom or Dad. Obeying ungodly counsel will do you no good. It will only HARM YOU!
