ONE OF OUR NIGERIAN CHURCH CHORUSES THAT I HAVE FOUND PARTIALLY FAULTY is the one that says: “Me I No Go Suffer, I No Go Beg For Bread…” It’s scripturally half correct and half wrong.
Sure enough, God’s Word says that the righteous shall not be forsaken neither shall his children take to the streets, bowls in hand, and entreating men for crumbs of bread to survive (Psalm 37:25). But suffering? God tells us both in the Old and the New Testament that the Believer will have a taste of it(1 Peter 5:10; Psalm 34:19; 2 Timothy 3:12).
Just imagine Job singing that faulty chorus and doing so day after day and believing it to be true that because he was a just man he would never suffer? He wouldn’t only have been completely unprepared for the sea of sufferings into which he was later plunged, it’s most likely he would have turned his back on GOD, exactly as the devil confidently boasted(Job 1:8-11). But thank God Job wasn’t ignorant of the fact that righteousness does not exempt the godly from trials(Job 2:10)
As a couple, you and your Spouse should be spiritually, physically and emotionally prepared for the challenges of life because no matter how much you love each other, we live on on a planet that’s a battlefield and you’ll definitely face one form of battle or another as you go on in life’s journey. And that’s why God’s Word tells us:
“10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”(Ephesians 6:10-12)
Jesus Christ our Saviour tells us in John 16: 33
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. IN THE WORLD YE SHALL HAVE TRIBULATION: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33).
Tribulation means: sufferings, hardships, troubles, persecutions, etc. These are experiences the christian couple should not wish away but anticipate and be ready for.
Our anchor scripture
tells us that suffering is universal and that every man born of a woman will encounter it.
Sufferings, hardships and troubles come in different forms. For Job and his wife, it came in the form of the loss of their wealth, their ten precious children and Job’s health. For Abraham and Zechariah and their wives, it came in from of delayed fruit of the womb.
I don’t know what form of suffering you and your Spouse are going through today and how long it has lasted. Whatever it is, Jesus’ words in John 16: 33 quoted above tells you to cheer up because He(Christ) has overcome the world!
Your present trials are temporary. The Lord will deliver you and your family, wipe your tears, give you a new song and bless you with new dancing shoes to dance to His glory.
“Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness”(Psalm 30:11)
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”(Psalm 34:19)
