IN OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY, CHRISTIANS are commanded to serve in the ministry of HOSPITALITY. Why this command? It’s because God is always sending out His agents to serve in His kingdom projects at different points on Earth and He would need your home to host them as a point of physical lodging and refreshment.
Even though the command we’re looking at is for all christians, it’s obviously more for married couples because they are the ones with complete homes. We shall look at some couples who served God in this aspect of godliness.
1) ABRAHAM AND HIS WIFE SARAH
In Genesis 18:1-14, we find an account of how Abraham saw three travellers and invited them to make a stop over in his house and rest before proceeding on their journey. Unknown to him, those travellers were not earthly; they were celestial. It was actually God and two angels come in human flesh!
Abraham didn’t just receive them but showed them true hospitality. How? He literally made a feast for them. He killed a calf, not a goat or a ram. He killed a young, fresh and healthy cow when a fat chicken or two would have been enough. He was extravagant and lavish in his hospitality even though they were total strangers to him. But, behold, they were from Heaven!
Abraham didn’t only host them, he personally made himself the Steward of the occasion. He personally presented the meal and waited on them as they ate! On that occasion, God pronounced very clearly that Sarah would surely give birth to Isaac.
2) LOT AND HIS WIFE
When God’s Angels came to destroy Sodom, they came prepared to stay in the streets. When Lot saw them he begged them to come and lodge in his home. And like Abraham, he also made them a feast.(Genesis 19:3). But do you know what? Those Angels safely evacuated Lot and his family out of Sodom before destroying it; saving their lives. All this shows that when you’re hospitable, you don’t lose rather you get blessed.
3) THE SHUNAMITE WOMAN AND HER HUSBAND(2 Kings 4:8-17)
This couple was hospitable to Elisha the Prophet again and again and even built a house and furnished it for him. For their acts of hospitality, Elisha pronounced a prophetic word for them to have a child and it came to pass. Again another couple who was hospitable got blessed for using their home as a resting and “refueling” point for God’s workers: Prophet Elisha and Gehazi his servant.
Sir and Ma, what are you doing as a couple to expand and extend the frontiers of God’s Kingdom on Earth; particularly if God has already blessed you with wealth?
It’s good to give tithes and offerings but remember our anchor scripture for today and obey it in new and imaginative ways and God will richly reward you.
