WE HAVE THUS FAR SEEN that Spouses must be spiritually strong in their spirit man and they must also be fortified with Power and Might of God (Ephesians 6:10).

Today, we’re going a step further.

We’re looking at the next thing we’re commanded to do beyond being STRONG. It’s to be properly dressed for battle. Why? Because without the armour of God we will not be able to stand against the attacks of Satan which come as “Wiles”(Ephesians 6:11).

The dictionary defines Wiles as “devious or cunning stratagems employed in manipulating or persuading someone to do what one wants.” So Satan uses Wiles to get people to do what he wants!

The dictionary further says that Wiles are similar to
“tricks, ploys, schemes, manoeuvres, subterfuges, cunning, stratagems, contrivances, guile and craftiness.”

Aren’t these exactly the way the devil operates all the time?

He doesn’t attack most times by plain and direct fights. No. Don’t you remember how he cunningly stole the Dominion over the Earth from the first couple? He didn’t shout, threaten or throw anything at them to frighten them. He quietly came with a conversation. That’s “Wiles”!

Yes, he came with a neighbourly talk that sounded like a friendly interaction. But his intent was to subtly push them into Sin; resulting in the loss of their spiritual lives, their special relationship with Him, etc

Ask some of those whose marriage fell apart and you’ll be surprised at how so ordinary and insignificant what led to the breakup of their union is. It was a carefully planned stratagem of the enemy that they unknowingly embraced and “Boom!”, their union fell apart forever.

Here are the pieces of the armour of God that we’re to put on to protect us from the Wiles of the devil.

1) TRUTH.
We should have our loins girded with Truth(Ephesians 6:14). Falsehood, lying, deception, untruthfulness etc must not be part of our lives.

2) THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. We must walk in righteousness consistently. Practical purity and holiness must be hallmarks of our lives.

3) PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.
This should be our sandals!(Isaiah 52: 7)

4) THE SHIELD OF FAITH
Most important of all, Faith should be the Shield we hold in our hand as a protective amour against the flaming darts of Satan and his hordes of Hell.

5) THE HELMET OF SALVATION
We must wear the
helmet of Salvation.

6) THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
The Word of God, which is the Sword of the Spirit, is a foremost weapon of offensive we must have in our hand all the time!

7) PRAYERS
Praying with all prayers and supplication in the Spirit must be our ceaseless engagement.

Couples, the kind of armour we are commanded to wear shows us how serious the battle we are involved in is. We are in a hand to hand wrestling combat with ancient demonic entities!(Ephesians 6:12)

Are we to be frightened? No! But we must be
watchful, sober and vigilant so we never get caught unprepared like the first couple, Adam and Eve, who lost everything through eating a few fruits they were cunningly deceived to eat through the Wiles of the devil.

Reread today’s devotional piece together just before bedtime and soberly discuss it.
