SELFISHNESS

Scripture:
‘LOOK NOT EVERY MAN ON HIS OWN THINGS, BUT EVERY MAN ALSO ON THE THINGS OF OTHERS.’
(PHILIPPIANS 2:4)

Selfishness is the narrow minded attitude of being concerned about one’s own interests, advantages and affairs only; without thoughts or consideration for others.

This ugly attitude is one of the reasons very many marriages aren’t thriving as they should.

In 1 Corinthians 13, which is the Bible’s great chapter on Love, we are told that love “seeks not her own interests”. In other words, Love is firstly “other person focused” before it thinks of its own interests. And that’s what our anchor scripture is telling us today.

Finnis Jennings Dakes’ commentary on that verse is as follows:

“Do not be selfish glorying in your own gifts and graces. Be just as interested in the blessings of others and rejoice to see them blessed.”

We are called in marriage to help one another grow in our respective potentials and to become optimally fruitful. This happens as we choose Selflessness above Selfishness.

God’s Word says:

“Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.”(1 Corinthians 10:24)
So, we are to mutually seek the increase and prosperity of one another.

God knowingly made you and your Mate one flesh even though you have starkly different inclinations, needs, desires, taste and even ambition. But He still paired you up knowing that if you’re able to conquer Selfishness, you’ll each be the key to one another fulfillment!

Our anchor scripture says:

“Look not every man on his own things, BUT EVERY MAN ALSO ON THE THINGS OF OTHERS.”(Philippians 2:4).

Meaning, while you mind your interests, take time to also give attention and needed support to the interests of your marriage Partner. And where necessary, set aside your own agenda an give full action to theirs.

In a nutshell, we are called to practice Selflessness in Marriage. You’ll find it easy to consistently do this when you always remember that you and your spouse are one flesh; and that what you do for them are actually for your own self.
