When God spoke the words of Genesis 2:18, He didn’t just have Adam’s immediate need for a companion in mind. He was looking across the span of history at the billions of men and women who would follow.
Marriage was designed for much more than simply curing loneliness. It is intended to be life’s greatest “Pleasure and Rejuvenation Resort.”
Think of marriage as an oasis in a desert of scorching heat and endless sand dunes.
A SANCTUARY OF COMFORT
Our anchor scripture reminds us that in a world of toil, trials, and travail, your marriage should be a place of:
* Comfort and Delight
* Celebration and Refreshing
* Passion and Affection
We are encouraged to make the most of this gift daily. It is a call to live the life of matrimonial love to its absolute fullest. Why?
Because according to God’s Word, the blessings found within marriage are our chief portion in this present life. While great rewards await us in Heaven, God desires for us to maximally relish the blessings of marriage here and now.
THE SCRIPTURAL PERSPECTIVE
Let’s look at how The VOICE translation presents our anchor verse:
> “Enjoy life with the woman you love. Cherish every moment of the fleeting life which God has given you under the sun. For this is your lot in life, your great reward for all of your hard work under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 9:9)
Living together and enjoying one another is your special portion—it is your biggest reward under the sun! The Living Bible (TLB) reinforces this:
> “Live happily with the woman you love through the fleeting days of life, for the wife God gives you is your best reward down here for all your earthly toil.”
VALUE THE PRIVILEGE
Unfortunately, many couples fail to optimize the blessings stockpiled within their marriage. Often, they hardly recognize or esteem these gifts.
Having a mature person of the opposite sex as your own, living life by your side, is no small blessing. We must value this privilege. The physical intimacy of marriage—the kisses, embracing, cuddling, and the shared vulnerability of one another—are treasures meant to be opened and enjoyed daily.
Are you the spouse who responds to a partner’s touch with a hiss, a pout, or by rudely pushing them away? Hostility toward your mate’s affection is often a sign of misplaced priorities. Today is the day to shift that perspective.
CONCLUSION
Beginning today, choose to make the most of your marriage every single day. Live joyfully with each other as covenant lovers!
