LOVEBIRDS' DEVOTIONAL

Enriching Matrimonies

MATRIMONIAL SANITATION (PT. 2)

Scripture:
‘BUT IF YE FORGIVE NOT MEN THEIR TRESPSSES, NEITHER WILL YOUR FATHER FORGIVE YOUR TRESSPASSES.’
(MATTHEW 6:15)

🤎🍂🍄‍🟫🌰As we saw in yesterday’s devotional, spouses confessing their faults to one another and forgiving each other after a crisis or misunderstanding is similar to cleaning the home. This is because no matter how beautiful and well-furnished your sitting room and bedrooms may be, when there is discord, hatred, and unforgiveness between you, your home is spiritually dirty, and both of you cannot feel fully at rest in your hearts, no matter how much you pretend.

🐂In fact, spiritually sensitive visitors to your home will easily see through the curtains of hypocrisy you have used to deceive most people, and some of those keenly observant Christians may call your attention to the fact that certain things are amiss in your relationship.

🧅In marriage, no matter how painful the misdeed or wrongdoing of your spouse may be, you need to resolve the issue before sunset. And if you are the offender, humble yourself, apologise to your mate, and sincerely ask for their pardon.
🫚And if you are the innocent mate, be gracious and merciful and pardon the transgression of your errant marriage partner. Why?

🫘Because, according to our anchor scripture, if you do not forgive others their trespasses, irrespective of how grievous they may be, neither will God forgive you your own sins.

🤎🍂🍄‍🟫🌰SPEAK OUT IF YOUR SPOUSE IS DANGEROUS!
However, there are situations where simply giving forgiveness is not enough and should not be the end of the matter. What are such situations?

🥚One such situation, just as we have taught in the past, is when your mate demonstrates deadly or dangerous behaviour, such as picking up a gun to shoot you or using a wooden club, a pestle, hammer, or some other apparently deadly object to hit you in the name of being angry.

🥔If your spouse is the kind of man or woman who is full of intense anger and driven by extreme rage when fighting you, no matter how they pacify you afterwards, asking you not to speak out but to “please, let bygone be bygone,” don’t consent. For the sake of your life, refuse to be fooled: speak out!

🥨Yes, forgive, but speak out to those who are stakeholders in your life and theirs. They include your parents, their parents, and your spiritual leaders. These people are in the position to call your irrational and dangerous spouse to order. Doing this is necessary so that you do not get killed one day by your mate, as has happened to several others in the past as you’ll read in the following true life accounts.

🤎🍂🍄‍🟫🌰CONCLUSION: TRUE-LIFE STORIES
In 2011, a youth church pastor brutally stabbed his banker wife to death at their residence in Isolo, Lagos State, Nigeria, following a severe marital dispute. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death.

🍗In 2022, a Nigerian gospel music artist died as a result of severe and prolonged domestic abuse by her husband, a pastor. He was tried, found guilty of culpable homicide, and sentenced to death.

🧇These brutal husbands must have shown traits of their heartlessness in the past before taking the final actions that led to their spouses’ deaths.

🥚As a spouse, it is your duty to cry out when you see telltale signs that your mate is a dangerous person. Forgive their wrongs, but don’t fail to report them to the people we mentioned earlier.🌰🍄‍🟫
