OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY is drawn from the account of the first documented religious activity on earth. An activity that birthed the most unexpected: a gruesome murder!
The two brothers, Cain and Abel: one a Farmer and the other a Shepherd, must have woken up that morning excited to go before God and offer sacrifice to Him.
But the rejection of Cain’s offering led to ugly outcomes. What went wrong?
What went wrong was that someone became angry and also failed to manage his anger and negative emotions. And that person was Cain.
In our anchor scripture, God asked Cain why he was angry and his face downcast. It wasn’t that He didn’t know because He watched all that transpired. His question was like saying, “What reason do you have to be angry?”
Cain had no reason to be angry. God never plays partiality and He’s never unfair. Abel didn’t in any way stand on the way of his sacrifice enjoying divine acceptance. His offering simply wasn’t good enough to be accepted and that was it. All he needed to have done was to go back home and prepare to come another day with an acceptable offering. But Cain wouldn’t see his own faults but sought to fix the blame on someone else.
Long story short, Cain killed Abel and became the first murderer on planet Earth!
What can we learn from all this? There are at least five lessons.
(1) BEWARE OF BLIND RAGE
An Online dictionary defines “Blind Rage” as
an “intense, uncontrollable anger that overwhelms a person’s ability to think clearly, act rationally, or consider the consequences of their actions.” This exactly describes what Cain allowed in his life.
Whenever you are so angry it’s affecting your ability to think reasonably, just know that it’s no more ordinary. You’re under a negative demonic influence. Thankfully, you can have the victory over it by the Word of God, the Blood of Jesus and by exercising your authority as a Believer, if you’re born again.
(2) DON’T LET ANGER ABIDE IN YOUR HEART OVERNIGHT
Cain went home angry and remained angry until the anger grew exceedingly fierce and hot and he ended up taking his brother’s life.
You might have heard or read news about a husband or wife who killed their Spouse. It’s the same pattern of Anger left in the heart to grow until it became a monster.
God’s Word tells in Ephesians 4 to not let our Anger result in sinning. And how to achieve this is to never let our Anger stay until sunset:
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath”(Ephesians 2:26)
(3) CAST ANGER AND WRATH AWAY FROM YOUR LIFE
The case of Cain shows how Anger can turn a religious man into a murderer suddenly.
God commands you to throw Anger out of your life:
“But now he also put off all these; anger, wrath”(Colossians 3:8a)
(4) ANGER AND WRATH ARE NEVER INSTRUMENTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Human Anger and Wrath cannot be instruments for the use of God in any way and that’s why we’re commanded to be “slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God”(James 1:19c-20)
(5) ANGER HAS GRAVE CONSEQUENCES
Anger starts like a small flame but ends up as a mighty inferno, if not controlled.
Cain became a vagabond and a wonderer for his sin of murder that stemmed from Anger.
Today, very many are in prison; some serving a life sentence and others awaiting execution by hanging, electric chair, the lethal injection or some other form of termination because of what they did in the fit of Anger.
Sir/Ma, are you the type that’s easily provoked, quickly offended and often stirred to wrath? Please, beware; lest you find yourself in the wrong place and your freedom lost forever.
Many of those who angrily used an object to hit their husband or Wife resulting in unexpected death are still languishing in prison; their dreams shattered, their hopes crushed and their destiny terminated. Don’t go and join them in the dark dungeon.
