TODAY, OUR DEVOTIONAL’S title comes as a question: ARE YOU A COCONUT PARTNER OR AN APPLE SPOUSE?
In our anchor Bible passage, the lady praises her husband. She refers to him, “AS THE APPLE TREE AMONG THE TREES OF THE WOOD”! In other words, her husband tastes sumptuous! He’s easily accessible and easily enjoyable!
If you’ve eaten Apples before, you’d know that they’re distinctively delicious, munchy and a great delight to eat.
But to enjoy fruits like Pawpaw, you have to first peel them and clean out the black seeds before eating.
How about the Coconut? Oh, the Coconut saddles you with the task of first expending your energy to carefully remove the thick and chaffy covering, which takes quite some time. Then you move on to breaking it open and thereafter carefully removing the white, edible part to eat. If you’re not careful, you may get injured in the course of the whole exercise.
Cashew fruits taste great but you must eat them minding your dress. If the juice drops on your beautiful new dress, sorry! It leaves dark and indelible marks on it forever.
But the Apple fruit is different. It presents no difficulty or risks to the eater. It’s rich in taste and highly nutritious.
There are other fruits that are not even tasty but people “manage” to eat them because of their health benefits or medicinal values. These include Kola nuts and Bitter kola.
As a Spouse, what kind of fruit tree could you be likened to? Jesus said, “By their fruits ye shall know them.” What kind of fruit are you like? The woman in our anchor scriptures likened her Man to the Apple tree. She went on to tell us that she sat in his shade with great delight and his fruit was sweet to her taste!
Sir, can your wife sit in your “shade” with great delight and freely eat your fruits? Or are you the bullying and maltreating “macho man” husband whose presence strikes fear and dread into your wife? If you’re the type of man the last sentence describes, then there’s need for you to change.
It doesn’t make sense if your wife lives in dread of you because you have conditioned her that way.
Dear Wife, how about you? How do you taste? Are you the type of woman whose husband can’t really tell your taste because he only sees you but is very rarely allowed to touch let alone “taste” you? There are such women. Outsiders behold their beautiful bodily build and feminine endowments and assume that their husband lives in a Lover’s Utopia and freely enjoys those luscious breasts and lovely body but the opposite is the case. She hasn’t let the man touch her for the past twelve years!
As we approach the end the old year and the beginning of a new one, it’s important that you check yourself as to what kind of Spouse you are. Check yourself on how easy or difficult you are for your Spouse to enjoy. It’s time to consider your ways and make changes. Remove the invisible barbed wire fencing you’ve hedged yourself with all these years just so your partner won’t easily have access to you. Those barbed wire fencing aren’t just bad, they’re evil.
Several years ago, I read about a housewife who wasn’t beautiful but had a quality her husband greatly cherished. The quality was this: every time her husband wanted her in bed for Sex, she was willingly and happily available. If you ask me, I would say, this is an Apple Wife and a true Married Lover. This is the kind of wife that proves that practical obedience to God’s Word (1 Corinthians 7: 2-5) is by far better than Beauty (Proverbs 31:30).
In marriage, don’t be a Coconut or Palm nut: always difficult to crack open. Rather be like the Apple fruit: easy to eat and richly tasty!

π·π TAKE-HOME LESSON: IT’S NOT HOW RICH YOU ARE AS A HUSBAND OR HOW BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE AS A WIFE THAT COUNTS BUT HOW RICHLY TASTY AND EASILY AVAILABLE YOU ARE TO YOUR SPOUSE.
