In our devotional piece for Saturday October 11, 2025, we noted that:
where the Priest and the Levite woefully failed, the Samaritan shined illustriously. He demonstrated that he had a working conscience and that his internal moral compass was functional. He showed that he had a heart that truly reverenced and feared God; and a mind that was sensitive to the misfortune for his fellow man. This is what really matters in life.
When Spouses are “Samaritans” in their Marriage, it will be a sweet colony of Heaven on Earth.
In Marriage, it’s your calling to practice, not only the dimensions of love that offer you gratifications but also the forms of Love that offer you nothing in return for all your efforts except the knowledge and the fulfillment that you have done the will of God.
When the Samaritan spent his Oil and Wine on the stranger, there was no pleasure in it for him. When he set him on his horse and moved him to the Inn in another town and spent the night caring for him and nursing his wounds, there was no immediate gain whatsoever for him.
Similarly, you are called in Marriage to serve and minister to each other sacrificially and in other ways that hold no profit for you except the joy that God is pleased with you and will therefore reward you in His time; and in His own unique way for your obedience to His Word.
Strong and active as your Spouse is, there’ll sometimes come moments, hours or even days when they’re worn and weary and very low in spirit and would need your patient and gentle tending. At such a time, be the Samaritan Spouse. Come down from your comfortable horse. Bring down your well packed luggage, open it and minister the “Oil and Wine” to the “wounds” of your marriage partner.
The story of the Good Samaritan was told by the Lord Jesus not to excite or entertain us but to instruct us and to call us to walk in practical, selfless and sacrificial love.
Let that model of neighbourly love guide you and your Spouse as you live together as married Lovers.
True Lovers don’t only practice romantic and sexual love. They are Samaritan Spouses who make saving, servicing and restoring one another to newness a core and permanent value in their union.
Choose to be enthusiastic, zealous and practicing Samaritan Spouses to each other in your Marriage and yours will be a Matrimony that younger couples can learn from.
