THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ST. PETER BASILICA IN VATICAN CITY BEGAN IN 1506. The builders were intent on building a cathedral that would last. The construction work continued until 1615 when the building was finally completed. St. Peter’s Basilica took 107 years to build. This year 2025, it is 410 years old and has practically served whole generations!
In Hebrews 3:4a, the Bible tells us that “every house is BUILT by some one”. And Proverbs 14: 1 declares: “every wise woman BUILDS her house”. All these attest to the fact that there must be proper construction work or else there’s no durable home. In effect, it means there must be a well built marriage on which a home must be founded because Marriage is the foundation of every home.
Sadly, what many couples have done after saying “I DO” at the Altar has been to start resting! They saw no need for work. They just began living together, eating together and sleeping together; leaving the real work of BUILDING THE MARRIAGE completely undone!
Sir/Ma, when God joined you and your Spouse in marriage, his design and desire was that your union would last until the moment death separates you. For that to become a happy reality, you must BUILD your covenant relationship DAILY. That’s how to have a marriage that will last.
In the past thirty years, there have been several incidents of collapsed buildings in West Africa. These have been due to the use of substandard building materials, poor construction work, engagement of quacks as Engineers, Supervisors, etc.
Similarly, many marriages have collapsed not because the Spouses were not God’s perfect will for each other but because of ignorance on the part of the Spouses on how to build their marriage rightly and with the right building materials. Now, what are the right materials for building a lasting marriage? They are: The Word of God on Marriage.
In Matthew chapter 7, Jesus tells us about two men who built. The first one, a wise man, began his construction by first digging the earth in search of a solid foundation. He found a rocky ground and upon it laid the foundation of his building. He didn’t stop there. He was selective of the building materials he used. He used the Word of God to build by practicing and obeying it.
The second man just built without laying a foundation. HE BUILT RIGHT ON THE SAND.
Later when the Wind, the Rain and the Flood came calling, the house built on the ROCK stood strong and immoveable but the one built on the SAND collapsed calamitously.
Applying the story above to Marriage, the man who built his house on THE ROCK represents spouses who practice their marriage strictly according to God’s commandments on Marriage while the man who built on the sand represents couples who live their married lives according to the dictates of their minds and their culture.
Whether you like it or not, the Wind, the Rain and the Flood will most definitely come. Those three elements stand for the trials, troubles and tribulations of life. That’s why it’s of uttermost importance that you give attention to obeying every word of God on marriage.
Many years ago, I met a man who told me with misty eyes that when he was in Prison, his wife slept with other men. No one prays to find himself behind bars. But when it happened to him, his wife lacked the self control to faithfully keep herself for him. If she truly believed and practiced the marital scripture that says,
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: BUT WHOREMONGERS AND ADULTERERS GOD WILL JUDGE.”(Judges 13:4), she wouldn’t have slept with other men. Why? It’s because the Word you strongly believe instills the fear of God and His Strength into you to obey it.
Another man, a Lumberer, whose professional lumbering Belt suddenly snapped, fell from a tree into a wood cutting machine that was fully in operation. He was rescued by colleagues but the powerful engine had almost mangled him. After many months in the hospital, he returned home badly disfigured and confined to a wheelchair. After being with him for sometime, the wife told him she was leaving. She couldn’t see how she’d spend the rest of her life with a badly deformed husband. If she wholeheartedly believed the scripture that says:
“Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. WHAT THEREFORE GOD HATH JOINED TOGETHER, LET NOT MAN PUT ASUNDER.”(Matthew 19: 6), she wouldn’t have chosen to divorce him.
So, faith and obedience to God’s commandments and instructions on Marriage are the building materials for constructing Marriages that will withstand the ravages of the Wind, the Rain and the Flood when they come and as many times as they come.
