AFTER I GOT BORN AGAIN in1979 and read in the book of Proverbs that beauty is vain, I couldn’t come to terms with it. This was because growing up, Beauty was one of the things we saw as a foremost quality in the life of a woman. What with the glossy pictures of the scantily clad ladies that adorned the front page of the popular and widely read Drum Magazine of those days? What about the pinup girls in the center spread of Afrofun, NewBreed and other magazines that all eulogized Beauty as the first quality of the consummate woman? But as I grew older in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, I realized that it isn’t that God doesn’t recognize physical beauty; after all, He created it. Beauty is vain simply means that there are other necessary and fundamental qualities of womanhood that by far surpass and outweigh Beauty which is all about bodily colour, shape, skin texture and the spread of hair. In comparison with those deep, precious and life impacting qualities, attributes and virtues, Beauty is completely dwarfed and reduced to mere dust and ashes. When a woman has these higher qualities, her name rings a bell in both high and low places, both in her lifetime and after. Remember the Shunamite woman? Till this day, no one knows if she was beautiful or not. But her acts of kindness, hospitality and generosity that impacted Elisha and made him speak a prophetic word in her favour are forever remembered.
In our anchor scripture passage for today are glorious qualities of womanhood that surpass beauty and will make any Wife to stand out.
1. SOBERNESS. To be sober means to be serious, grave, solemn and clear-headed. It’s the quality of not being under any influence that distorts one’s mind and sense of judgement. This is a quality you must lay hold upon as a Wife. Be a woman who is always SOBER. It’s not only alcohol that makes a person lose soberness. Wrong association can make a woman lose her soberness. Many wives have gone into adultery because of lack of soberness. A rich man made them a promise of N5 million if they would sleep with him. They quickly got drunk with covetousness and began thinking of all the new things that N5 million could bring into their lives and quickly consent, forgetting their husband, their children and even their own reputation. But a sober woman would not consent. She would look at the man in the eyes and tell him: “What an insult. Oh, you think I am one of those cheap housewives that your money can buy? Your money perish with you.” You must be equipped with Soberness all the time to be able to properly evaluate any given circumstance. Soberness will help you to be alert in a world where the devil is on the loose looking for preys to devour(1 Peter 5: 8).
2. LOVE YOUR HUSBAND. One of the great qualities that will make you strikingly beautiful as a Wife is LOVE FOR YOUR HUSBAND. It’s true that the Bible repeatedly talks about husbands loving their wives. But this verse turns Wives’ attention to the need for them to love their own husbands. Dearly Beloved, to succeed in this area, you’ll have to obey this command in two ways. First, love him by doing him good, serving him and meeting his needs. Secondly, love him by BEING IN LOVE with him round the clock. Of the two, the second comes first because if you’re in love with him, you’re energized to do him good, serve him and meet his needs. Most women have embraced the false belief that it’s a man that should be pursuing the woman. That’s only true before marriage in the sense that it’s not the place of the lady to propose marriage to a man and to court him. That’s the role of the man. But once you’ve become husband and wife, the wife should ardently pursue her husband with love just as the Church pursues Christ with love. The Church says “We love Him because He first loved us.” Not “We won’t love Him. He is the One that started the whole relationship and He’s omnipotent and tireless. Let Him continue loving us. We don’t need to return His love. After all, He can do without it.” No, the Church isn’t saying any such. Similarly, a Wife should choose to be ardently in fervent love with her husband all the time. When you’re in love with your man, it strengthens you against the temptations to go infidelity.
Be a sober woman who is ardently and fervently in love with your husband! It pays.

Tonight, you’re going to wash each other’s feet as Jesus Christ washed His disciple’s feet. It was an act of Humility and Love. Yours should also be the same. Husband, you’ll do it first and your wife will follow.
