๐๐ค๐ซOur scripture for today says, “It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and an angry woman.”
How on earth would anyone suggest that it is better to live a solitary life in the wilderness than to be in the company of a beautiful, shapely, and smooth-skinned member of the fairer sex? But the counsel of our focus scripture is not about all women. It focuses on the contentious and angry wife specifically.
AN EVACUATION ADVICE
๐๐ค๐ซThere are things in the life of this woman that warrant, or make, the evacuation advice offered in our anchor scripture critically necessary. She is aggressive, combative, argumentative, confrontational, hostile, opposed to her husband, and almost always pitched against him. She openly rebels against his leadership.
She despises him, maligns him, and disrespects him with impudence, thinking that she is being bold and unafraid.
The life of this woman is further characterised by constant criticism of her husband, demeaning language, and utter disdain that silently but consistently erode his self-esteem and chip away at his health.
Instead of the sweet and loving companionship that a loyal wife offers, this man gets stings, rejection, and isolation, and is soon left feeling emotionally exhausted and drained!
๐๐ค๐ซA PROVERBS 21:19 WOMAN IN ACTION
I once visited the home of the kind of woman described in our anchor scripture.
The first time I saw her was when she and her husband were in courtship, and she looked, oh, so strikingly beautiful. Several years after their wedding, I paid my first visit as I was in their city.
It was during that visit that I realised that the strikingly pretty lady wasn’t who I had thought she was. She turned out to be a Proverbs 21:19 woman.
I had barely sat down when she strode out of the house to the outdoor spot where we sat, rumbling like a thunderstorm and spewing vituperations at her husband, unmindful of the fact that I was in her home for the very first time. She didn’t even think it necessary to greet me or the man who brought me. Her wild fury was targeted at her peace-loving and God-fearing husband. Her chilling words froze my visit, and I had to take my leave after a very brief stay. This beloved brother died after a while.
Sir/Ma, the venom of death isn’t only in the fangs of the serpent; it is also in the unbridled tongue of a heartless husband or wife. For the Scripture says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21a).
๐๐ค๐ซTHE WISDOM OF THE ANCIENT OF DAYS
A contentious and angry woman isn’t just a badly behaved person. She is far worse. She is toxic, poisonous, pugnacious, venomous, dangerous, corrosive, and lethal.
Sir/Ma, what we have in our anchor scripture isn’t a suggestion from a council of elders, nor is it an idea from the ancients. Rather, it is the wisdom of the Ancient of Daysโthe Lord Himself.
๐๐ค๐ซIN YESTERDAY’S DEVOTIONAL
In yesterday’s devotional, we said, “A woman can also beat, batter, and wound her husband without ever laying a hand on him.” And that’s exactly what the contentious and angry wife does. She systematically frustrates her husband through constant nagging, quarrelling, and bickerings.
Yes, she puts him through sustained rejection, humiliation, or deprivation of sexual intimacy until it leads to deep exasperation and potentially fatal outcomes such as high blood pressure or heart disease.
๐๐ค๐ซTHOU SHALT NOT KILL
Killing isn’t done only with swords, guns, grenades, bombs, and the like. It can also be done through constant and unrelenting contentiousness and unbridled anger.
๐๐ค๐ซMADAM, BE A HOME MAKER
The role of a wife is to turn her husband’s house into a sweet haven called HOME. She does this primarily by having a sweet personality that makes her a paragon of peace, an oasis of love, a river of romance, a fountain of wisdom, and an ocean of affection, passion, and sexual delights.
But when she is instead a mountain of contentiousness and anger that erupts at the slightest irritation, the Scripture says that living in a wilderness is better than living with such a heart-breaking woman.
๐๐ค๐ซCONCLUSION
Now, is our anchor scripture telling husbands to abandon toxic wives immediately? Definitely not. That isn’t the primary purpose of this verse. Rather, its first purpose is to open the eyes of wives to the danger of being contentious and angry in marriage: it could cost them the loss of their husbands.
Love your husband, respect him, and submit yourself to his God-ordained authority in the home and in marriage. That will help keep him healthy, and he will live long for you and your children.๐
