FINISHING STRONG: A SCRUTINY OF THE LIFE OF LOT’S WIFE

Scripture:
‘AND HE PRESSED UPON THEM GREATLY; AND THEY TURNED IN UNTO HIM, AND ENTERED INTO HIS HOUSE; AND HE MADE THEM A FEAST, AND DID BAKE UNLEAVENED BREAD, AND THEY DID EAT.’
(GENESIS 19:3)

In one of our recent devotional teachings(July 27, 2025), we looked at the Philippian jailor’s wife and saw that she was a submissive wife and a woman of good character.

The wife of Lot could equally be commended and classified as a woman of good character but for her disobedience to the heavenly command that came through the Angels she had joined her husband to graciously host in her home. This is why we must all be very careful to ensure that our obedience is complete.

A Scrutiny Of The Life Of Lot’s wife

(1) She Was Part Of Abraham’s Great Journey Of Faith

Do you know that when Abraham set out on the journey of faith for which he has become universally famous, Lot’s wife was among those that went out with him?
Read this:

“So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; AND LOT WENT WITH HIM: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.”(Genesis 12:4)

Lot’s wife isn’t directly mentioned but she definitely ventured into the unknown with her husband. A rebellious wife would decline joining in the journey that seemed completely foolish at the time because not even Abraham himself knew exactly where they were going. Lot’s wife was part of that team of believing people.

And the part capitalized in the immediate verse above shows that Abraham never coerced or persuaded Lot to join in the journey. He came along of his own free will. And his wife, a submissive and obedient woman, didn’t oppose him but willingly set out with him. We can see from this that Lot’s wife was a good woman.

(2) She Travelled To Egypt With Father Abraham During The Famine

When the famine hit and Abraham set out for Egypt and her husband tagged along, she stood faithfully with her husband and travelled to Egypt.

(3)She Never Snobbed Or Despise Mama Sarah Because She Was Barren

Do you remember that when Hagar became pregnant she despised Sarah? She was a common slave girl but had the nerve to be so insolent. But not Lot’s wife. Lot’s wife was fruitful and bore children yet never taunted Mama Sarah in any way. She was a good part of the family and saw Mama Sarah as her mother.

(4) She Submissively Relocated To Sodom.

When her husband chose to relocate to Sodom, she didn’t question his authority or disbelieve his sense of judgement. Perhaps, she was submissive to a fault. But we can’t fault the fact that she was indeed submissive and loyal to the man God made her leader.

(4) She Was Submissive In The Bedroom

My foster grandmother once said to my wife and I: “Efu Ēnwú réé madu m’Onē.” It means, you know a man is by the ordinary things he does.

If Lot’s wife was submissive in several matters as we’ve already seen, then she definitely was also submissive in the bedroom. She wasn’t a rebellious lover.

(5) She Hosted And Entertained Angels

Just like the Philippian jailor, her husband suddenly brought two men home one evening. Our anchor scriptures shows that she received them. No questioning her husband’s decision. She made a feast for those strangers who were actually Angels on divine assignment! She was as good as Mama Sarah in this respect.

(6) She Left Sodom Along With Her Husband In Obedience To The Angels

When the Angels eventually made their identity and mission known, Lot’s wife believed and set out with her husband to escape the imminent judgement on the city. Do you know what this meant? It took faith to leave Sodom because nothing made it look like the judgement of God would fall on the city that morning because everything remained the same. But Lot and his family’s experience of how the men rescued Lot from the door and smote the Sodomites with blindness was a proof that the men were supernatural beings.

(7) The Undoing Of Lot’s Wife

What made Lot’s wife not to finish strong? What turned her into a pillar of salt? What ruined her beautiful spiritual career that spanned several years? Just one thing: disobedience to the Angel’s command not to look back. Just that! Only that!!!

(8) The Calamitous Consequences Of Lot’s Wife’s One Time Disobedience

*She became a pillar of salt. Her life suddenly cut of and her name and reputation forever ruined!

*Her husband was robbed of his wife and lover. This led to his sleeping with his daughters and begetting incestuous children.

*Her daughters became morally derailed leading to their luring their father to sleep with them. If she were alive and with them, no such things would have happened. After all those girls were already engaged to be married before they left Sodom. And they were both virgins despite the great immorality in Sodom.

In conclusion, it’s extremely important to be fully balanced. Love your Spouse and be a good lover in marriage. But also make sure you are fully obedient to God outside your relationship with your Spouse.

Our obedience must be complete if we desire to walk through the pearly gates of heaven at last!
