GOD IS CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR OUTWARD APPEARANCE AS A MARRIED COUPLE

Scripture:
‘Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.’
(Genesis 3:21)

AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE SINNED, THE FIRST consequence of their disobedience was that they became naked and embarrassed. To cover up their shame, they sewed fig leaves together to make a dress but failed miserably. However, God had mercy on them and stepped in to remedy their ugly situation. Our anchor scripture tells us that He made for them ” *GARMENTS* OF SKINS AND CLOTHED THEM.”

The purpose of God’s intervention was to COVER THEIR NAKEDNESS and this reveals to us the real purpose of dressing. Put another way, the purpose of dressing is to prevent the exposure of all parts of the body that are better concealed. These are those parts that evoke sexual lust in the opposite sex as well as those parts we feel awkward and ashamed when persons other than our spouse see them.
This means that when we wear clothings that fall short of fully covering our nakedness, we have really not dressed up. We are still wearing FIG LEAVES.

When we soberly and meditatively reflect on our anchor verse, we can see that God is a dress maker. In a sense, God is a Tailor. As we all know, every Tailor measures his client before working on their cloth. So God “took the measurements” of Adam and Eve and made their garments according to their respective sizes, shapes and gender. He could have made unisex outfits but didn’t. He made a male garment for Adam, one that suited his masculine figure. He also made a female garment for Eve, ensuring that there was enough provision or space for her breasts to be conveniently accommodated and for her hips and protrusive backsides to be safely hidden from view. Even though they were one flesh in marriage, yet he made different garments for them according to their gender(Deuteronomy 22:5)
If God was interested in the outward appearance of the first couple, then know that He is keenly interested in how you dress and what you wear.

Beloved, note that God used animal skins as the fabrics for the garments He made for the first couple. Animal skins are not transparent and so His objective of concealing their nakedness was not defeated. He has given you an example to follow: don’t wear transparent dresses.

But did God have to go to all this trouble? After all, there were no other eyes seeing Adam and Eve, even if their fabrics was thin and revealing. God did not clothe them properly just to avoid anyone seeing them. HE DID SO BECAUSE IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

If God clothed the first couple properly and ensured that their nakedness was fully covered when there were no other eyes seeing them, how much more should married couples fully cover their nakedness in our present world where there are billions of eyes watching us?

For the christian couple, dressing properly is not an option. It’s a must. This is because your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit and the Tabernacle of God Almighty (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 6:16)

Several years ago, an Actress in the Nollywood movies industry was criticized for her semi-nude dressing. Instead of feeling chastised and penitent, she was indignant. In response to her critics she said: “It’s my body. I will flaunt it.” Dear daughter of God, you’re different from this Actress. You dare not flaunt your body because it’s been bought with the precious blood of Christ.

We shall at this point focus on wives because the enemy of mankind, even Satan, greatly tempts, confuses and misleads many of them in the area of dressing. Dear Christian woman, firstly, your body belongs to God because He’s bought you with the Blood of Christ:

“19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

So your body is no longer yours but God’s. Therefore, ensure that your nakedness is fully covered always. If God fully covered the nakedness of Eve, then He expects no less from you. He expects you, as an intelligent being who has His Holy Spirit dwelling in you to put on only wears that fully conceal your nakedness. Secondly, your body belongs to your husband who paid a dowry on you and married you. Be always properly dressed and fully covered because it’s his honour. It dishonours him when you’re seen wearing Bumshorts, Mini or Micromini skirts outside and a wide armed singlet that exposes much of your breasts. It’s a reproach to him when you go about town wearing Torn Jeans that have wide perforations that reveal your thighs. Or leggings that show the exact shape of your bum bum. It’s a horrifying shame indeed!

If God was not happy with the semi-nude “attire” of Adam and Eve, and didn’t excuse it as being because they had no other options, then
know that it grieves Him deeply to see you dress semi-nude like them when you are in an era where modern textile industries abound and good cloths that can cover your nakedness are sold everywhere.

Finally, remember that your children are watching how you dress. May your dressing inspire them to love and cherish to dress piously and holily to the glory of God.
