ONE OF THE COMPONENTS OF TRUE LOVE is Honour. This important attribute of LOVE should be present in the day to day interactions of spouses, just as salt is present in every soup and heightens it’s taste.
Honour enriches the sweetness of Marriage.
What is Honour? Honour is high respect and esteem.
The opposites of Honour are disregard, disrespect, dishonour and shame.
In life, if you disregard, disrespect, dishonour and shame people, they distance themselves from you because any of those treatment inflict pain.
Everyone loves and enjoys being in the place where they’re highly respected and valued.
It’s true that in most Marriages, the husband is older than the wife but that has nothing to do with the need for them to mutually honour each other.
According to our anchor scripture, Marriage is an honourable relationship. It’s therefore necessary that Spouses consciously and deliberately honour, respect and hold each other in high esteem.
This is not just a good suggestion. It’s commanded in the Word of God. Husbands are told: “GIVING HONOUR UNTO THE WIFE, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life”(1 Peter 3:7B). Wives are commanded to REVERENCE THEIR HUSBANDS (Ephesians 5:33). Reverence is deep and profound respect that is the same as Honour.
What does honouring each other entail? It entails recognizing each other’s new office and status in marriage and according them the due respect they deserve. It entails talking to each other with respect even when there’s a misunderstanding and you’re offended and unhappy. It also involves according each other dignity; celebrating one another and praising your Spouse for the distinguished and noteworthy things they do.
When you treat people with honour and dignity, they’re inclined to want to come closer to you. You enjoy favour with them. With time, you’ll also reap honour from them in return because honour begets honour. This is exactly what happens in Marriage when Spouses honour each other. It gives them favour with one another and draws them into each other’s arms again and again; multiplying the peace, cordiality and harmony in their Marriage and Home.
