HONOURING EACH OTHER IN MARRIAGE (PT. 2)

Scripture:
‘NEVERTHELESS LET EVERYONE OF YOU IN PARTICULAR SO LOVE HIS WIFE EVEN AS HIMSELF; AND THE WIFE SEE THAT SHE REVERENCE HER HUSBAND.’
(EPHESIANS 5: 33)

ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THERE’S DISCORD AND disharmony in very many christian marriages is because our practice of christian life in the home and especially in the bedroom is faulty. In other words, we profess that we are children of God but don’t demonstrate that profession consistently in our relationship with our Spouse.

For example, you could see a wife go on her knees after the church Sunday morning worship service to greet the Pastor and she even tarries on her knees for three or four minutes greeting the Man of God with all humility and reverence. Well, this is good and commendable because the Servant of God is her spiritual shepherd and is deserving of that honour. However, when you look into the pages of scripture, you’ll see that the husband is the matrimonial head of the wife just as her Pastor is her spiritual overseer in the local Church and she’s commanded in scripture to REVERENCE HER HUSBAND as we can see in our anchor scripture for today. If she’s humble enough to go on her knees to greet the Pastor, will doing such for her husband whom she’s clearly commanded to reverence be wrong? Won’t doing so greatly enrich her relationship with her Man? It definitely will.

Let’s consider another scenerio. A husband greets women in church in sweet, gentle and gracious voice. Infact, you can feel piousness in his voice as he greets them meekly and asks after the welfare of their children and even dips his hand into his wallet and gifts their little children N1000 note each. But at home? Oh, he forgets that the scripture says: “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, GIVING HONOUR UNTO THE WIFE, AS UNTO THE WEAKER VESSEL, AND AS BEING HEIRS TOGETHER OF THE GRACE OF LIFE; that your prayers be not hindered.”(1 Peter 3:7). He sees the Sisters and the women in church as his fellow pilgrims but not the wife. Meanwhile, she’s a true child of God.
Instead, he’s incessantly roaring at her. He’s easily irritated over her trivial mistakes and their children marvel at how “Daddy who’s so sweet and gentle to other Mummies in church is ever furious at Mummy at home”!

There’s need for Spouses to know that they’re commanded to honour each other in marriage. In our anchor scripture, wives are commanded to deeply revere their husbands, which is: to highly honour them. And husbands are commanded in 1 Peter 3: 7 to honour their wives. Mutually honouring each other will bring so much peace and tranquility into their union. It will deepen their love and romance.
