IN MARRIAGE, THE HUSBAND IS THE HEAD OF the wife and the wife is to submit to him the same way she does to GOD. Unfortunately, some husbands see this as a license to subjugate, dominate and afflict the woman. Any husband who does so isn’t only sinning but drawing divine judgement upon himself.
Sir, being designated the Head of the wife doesn’t give a husband the licence to transform into a tyrant, a tormentor and an oppressor over the woman. Rather, he is to love her supremely as commanded in our anchor scripture for today.
According to our anchor scripture, the husband is to love his wife as profoundly as Christ loved the Church and gave His very life in an agonizing death to purchase her redemption. It’s in supremely loving his wife that the fulfillment of the husband lies because it is more blessed to give than to receive. It’s a calling he has to spend all of his life with her to learn, master and gain perfection in performing.
So, the husband’s role in Marriage is to be a SUPREME LOVER to the wife on all three levels of Love.
As it’s all too obvious, being a husband has completely nothing to do with authoritarianism in any guise because Christ Himself, Who is the Model for husbands, was never authoritarian in His relationship with the twelve disciples. Instead, He practiced humility, selflessness and servanthood in His daily living with them. He served them during meals(Luke 22: 27). He washed and towelled their feet on the eve of His crucifixion(John 13:3-17). His mindset was never that of pompously sitting down as the “Great Royal Majesty” to be waited upon and served. He came with the purpose of serving and giving His life as ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28).
From all above, we can see that the christian husband cannot succeed in marriage by using the traditional template of relating with his wife as a servant of some sort. No, No, No! Jesus said to the disciples:
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”(John 15:15)
Furthermore, Christ practices equality with the Church by making Believers joint heirs with Him as well as His brethren. Please, read:
“FOR BOTH HE THAT SANCTIFIETH AND THEY WHO ARE SANCTIFIED ARE ALL OF ONE: FOR WHICH CAUSE HE IS NOT ASHAMED TO CALL THEM BRETHREN”(Hebrews 2:11)
It’s this supreme level of Love that husbands are called to walk in as they daily live with their beautiful wives.
Contrary to the view of husbands that are traditionally inclined, MARRIAGE IS NOT A MASTER-SERVANT RELATIONSHIP. Instead it’s a supreme love union, where the wife submits to her husband in everything and the husband loves her supremely to the point of being willing to sacrifice his very life, if need be, for her wellbeing, fulfillment and happiness.
