TRAVEL BACK WITH ME IN TIME TO OUR LADY OF SCHOOLS COLLEGE, ANYIGBA, MIDDLE BELT REGION OF NIGERIA. The year is 1972. It’s a Saturday evening. Come with me to one of the entrances to the school hall or auditorium and watch freshers with their “long tails” preparing the long hall for the weekly social gathering. Feel the vibes, the excitement in the atmosphere, everyone in high spirits and eager to “boogie down”. (Remember, those were the early days of The Jackson Five. Jimmy Cliff was dominating the international pop music scene at the time while Nigerian stars like Fela Ransome-Kuti, Segun Bucknor, etc, had just emerged). Soon you’ll see boys coming out of the dormitories transformed into fine gentlemen as they appear in their best clothes, which they’re strictly forbidden to wear on other days.The hall is soon packed full and the social prefect, alias Tuner starts his Disc Jockey work. Silky hit songs like LOVE ROCK soon rent the air. As boys dance alone and some in pairs, the complain of those in pairs is that they’re dancing “BONE-TO-BONE”. They wish it would be “Bone and Flesh”. Now, who were they referring to as Bone? Themselves of course. Boys are Bones. And who were the Flesh they so longed to have in their midst? Girls. To us Girls were Flesh. We were not speaking from a biblical point of view yet how so right we were!

When God set to work to create the woman, He had enough bones in the body of man to pick from. He could have removed one of the femurs(thigh bones) or one of the tibia or fibular (leg bones) and with it created the woman to be a STRONG HELPER for the man. But that’s not what divine wisdom chose to do. God’s infinite wisdom chose to use a tender and bendable RIB to create for Man a gentle, tender, loveable and endlessly desirable being that he would enjoy to love, cherish, sing about, carry in his heart, hover around and greatly delight in. That’s what women are: creatures to be spoilt with affection, adoration and munificence!

Our anchor scripture makes it even clearer and yet very profound. Your Wife is your very BODY. She is a tender and delicate being that needs to be handled with uttermost gentleness.

Even in the secular world, women are referred to as the FAIRER SEX and their husband’s BETTER HALF. These views of women are not religious as it’s obvious but were born in eras when men valued women and saw them for who they truly are: Wingless Angels; terrestrial Cherubs among the sons of men. But it’s so sad that in our present world, few are the men who truly cherish women as it should be.

Women themselves have contributed in no small way to the present poor, thwarted and twisted view of who they are. How will one treat a woman tenderly when she strives so hard to dress like a man, walk like a man, talk like a man and considers it a sign of weakness to behave like a woman?

When the Bible commands Husbands to cherish their wives, it becomes the wife’s responsibility to ensure that she’s fully female and feminine, because “male and female created He them.”(Genesis 1:27)
A feminine woman is soft, yummy, alluring, desirable and pamperable. But when a woman is a “She-male” instead of Female, and behaves tough and rough like a motor park tout; wresting her husband’s every word, it becomes difficult for the man to cherish and cuddle her. You pamper that which looks up to you and not that which looks down on you condescendingly and with the air of superiority. Yes, when a woman becomes contentious, the tendency is for the man to resort to withdrawal and it’s perfectly scriptural. Look at the following verse:

“IT IS BETTER TO DWELL DWELL IN A CORNER OF THE HOUSETOP, THAN WITH A BRAWLING WOMAN IN A WIDE HOUSE.”(Proverbs 21:9). Do you know who a BRAWLING WOMAN is? Well, she’s the woman who FIGHTS. When a Wife is a fighter and fights her husband, the verse quoted immediately above tell us that it’s better for her husband leave the big house and dwell in the corner of the roof!
The corner of the roof simply means anywhere else but his house. To understand it better, let’s look at yet another scripture:

“IT IS BETTER TO DWELL IN THE WILDERNESS, THAN WITH A CONTENTIOUS AND AN ANGRY WOMAN.”(Proverbs 21:19) This verse confirms what’s I said earlier about Proverbs 21:9. When as a wife you’re ferocious and contentious, you make it difficult for your husband to handle you tenderly. Infact, his frame of mind shifts from attempting to pamper you to seeking to flee from you. And this is how many divorces and indefinite seperations have been born.

WIFE, you are the BODY of your husband. As you know, the body is always subject to the authority of the head and obeys it’s commands. So also obey your husband and let him lead you. HUSBAND, you know that the head is almost always naked wearing nothing and is therefore exposed to the sun and to the elements of the weather and endures all these for the good of the body. So should you love your wife. Bear and endure her faults and shortcomings. Celebrate her, cherish her, honour her and pamper her.

At bedtime, get a recorded song with a soothing melody playing. Make sure it’s on REPEAT. As it plays, play with each other for awhile and gradually shift into position and consummate your union anew; doing it
