IN OUR ANCHOR SCRIPTURE PASSAGE ABOVE, King Ahasuerus respectfully sent a powerful and honourable delegation to his wife, Queen Vashti, requesting her to come and display her beauty to his royal guests. If he had sent eunuchs or slaves to call her, perhaps she could have complained of being invited disrespectfully. But the king sent the seven chamberlains who who worked in the exclusive executive chambers of the Emperor’s Office. What an amazing opportunity to please her husband and satisfy his immediate craving to let his subjects know that she, Queen Vashti his wife, was an exceptionally beautiful woman!
What was too demanding in this request? Nothing.
But Queen Vashti didn’t see the opportunities hidden in the request but the inconveniences it would cost her to dress up or some other flimsy reasons. Well, she turned down the king’s request and her act of open disobedience resulted in what she never anticipated. It led to her sudden dethronement by an irreversible decree!!
What were the consequences of her rash decision not to obey the simple request of her husband? Here are a few.
1) HER SUDDEN AND IRREVERSIBLE DETHRONEMENT!
When she was sending her embarrassing answer to the King, she wasn’t mindful of the fact that she was dealing with the most powerful man in that Empire and that he could sack her. Well, it happened and it was her insubordination that triggered it.
2) SHE CUT HER PARENTS OFF FROM ALL THEIR SPECIAL PRIVILEGES AS IN-LAWS TO THE KING
The parents of Vashti and her siblings must have been enjoying several privileges courtesy of her marriage to the King. As the King’s In-laws, they enjoyed free access to the presidential palace, not to talk of the economic advantages they must have had. So much was waiting for them in the future since the reign of King Ahasuerus was only in it’s third year. But suddenly, BOOOM! Vashti’s unreasonable and unruly behaviour demoted them all.
3) A BLEAK FUTURE OF LONG SPINSTERHOOD
Once thrown out of the palace, it was unlikely that Vashti would find new love soon, let alone getting married. Except after the death of the mighty potentate, King Ahasuerus.
For as long as he was still alive, who would risk marrying her? It was an era in which Kings wielded absolute power and could kill by beheading, burning alive or by skinning alive! Which man, rich or poor, would risk their life to relate with her? So, with all her beauty, Vashti suddenly became a lady men fled from because she was too dangerous to step near. Her beauty was full and overflowing but every man in the Empire knew that she was a “forbidden fruit”.
The irony is that, it’s the same Beauty that her husband, the king, who paid a dowry on her, was asking her to come and display but she stubbornly refused. But now, no one would have anything to do with it.
If Vashti had soberly thought through the request of her husband, she would have realized that it wasn’t in any way harsh, wrong or even unreasonable. But her thoughtless answer undid her.
Dear wives, always remember that the command to submit to your husbands “IN EVERY THING”(Ephesians 5:24) wasn’t framed by your husband but by God Almighty, the One Who instituted Marriage.
Therefore, honour God by submitting to your husband in all things that are right.
King Ahasuerus was a heathen and a pagan, that’s why he removed Queen Vashti by a decree. For those of us who are christians, it’s not right for a husband to send his wife out of the marriage just because of disobedience. Nevertheless, a wife’s insubordination could make her fall out of favour with her husband and even attract divine discipline and punishment (Romans 13:1-2). It could make her experience marital dryness whereby she’s still in the marriage but her joy is seized.
Submit to your husband IN EVERYTHING and you’ll find that SUBMISSION is a great means of joy and fulfillment in Marriage.
