JOSEPH AND MARY ARE referred to by many as The Holy Family.
Well, we’re going to see this morning that even the Holy Family also experienced marital challenge at a point in their lifetime. But for God, their Marriage would have crashed and Mary would have had to raise Jesus as a Single Mom with all the attendant stigma.
Now, how did the challenge start and what kind of challenge was it? Here:
Mary had received an Angelic visitation. But that wasn’t in any way disturbing because Angelic manifestation wasn’t new in Israel. What was mysterious was that she became pregnant thereafter! That was indeed a hard nut to crack. Which new husband would understand it let alone believe and accept it?
Now, even though the Bible doesn’t tell us, we can conclude based on Mary’s upright life that she must have told Joseph about the Angel’s visit and her conception according to his annunciation.
Our anchor scripture starts at the point where Joseph, unable to come to terms with Mary’s story decided to part ways with her but peacefully. But there’s something about Joseph, HE DIDN’T RUSH ABOUT THE MATTER. HE SPENT TIME THINKING IT OVER TO AVOID REPERCUSSIONS ON MARY!
The second verse of our anchor scripture passage tells us it was while he was pondering on the matter that God stepped in and spoke to him! When God spoke to him, he realized that Mary was speaking the truth and nothing but the truth the whole while even though her story was strange, most unusual and very difficult to believe.
What are the lessons for us to learn? Here:
1) Never be rash to take action over on an issue in your marriage that you somehow don’t yet understand! It might look very strange and very hazy and your Spouse’s explanations not making any sense but try be like Joseph: give the matter some thoughts. Give your Mate’s “reasons” some patient and prayerful consideration first; instead of taking a cataclysmic and regrettable step in anger.
2) We can learn from Mary also. After disclosing to Joseph about her conception and how it all came about, she left the matter at that. If she saw disappointment in Joseph’s face, she didn’t get angry with him and accuse him of suspecting her. She put everything in hands of God. And did God speak up to vindicate her? Yes, He did big time!
When your Mate tells you something that sounds completely unbelievable and your mind tells you they’re lying and taking you for a fool, don’t rush to conclusion just yet.
Whenever both of you can’t understand each other, and the home is full of the fog of confusion, BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU DO! Beware lest you make a move that will irreversibly injure your union, your individual lives and your precious family.
