WHEN GOD JOINS A MAN AND A WOMAN, AND MAKES THEM HUSBAND AND WIFE, HE DOESN’T WALK AWAY. He’s around them because He knows they’ve embarked on a long and complicated Journey that will take them through paths they’ve never been through before and they would from time to time need His guidance.
He knows that there are ambushes of the enemy on the way and His direction would be needed by the couple to know what to do. For these reasons and more, God doesn’t leave Spouses after joining them.
There’s however the need for the couple to have listening and hearing ears that are inclined to God as well as hearts that are perceptive of His voice. God’s Word tells us in the Book of James: ” WHEREFORE, MY BELOVED BRETHREN, LET EVERY MAN BE SWIFT TO HEAR , SLOW TO SPEAK, SLOW TO WRATH”(James 1:19)
A close walk with God creates an atmosphere that enable Spouses to more easily hear the voice of God.
In our first anchor scripture, Joseph the Man who we’re told was A JUST MAN(Matthew 1:19), receives guidance in a dream in which an Angel tells him to take Baby Jesus and His mother, Mary, and flee with them to Egypt; because King Herod would come to kill the child! There’s no way Joseph could have known such deep secrets on his own and with his natural mind. But God graciously gave him this direction and he was swift in acting on it; and thereby saving the life of Jesus as well as his own and his wife’s life.
The good news for you and I is that God hasn’t changed. He still gives revelations of guidance to couples who walk with Him because it is written: “THE SECRET OF THE LORD IS WITH THEM THAT FEAR HIM: AND HE WILL SHOW THEM HIS COVENANT.”(Psalm 25:14)
Another common but yet important method of divine guidance that God uses to help couples is by speaking to them through each other. We see a good example of this in our second anchor scripture. In that scripture, God tells Abraham to heed the voice of Sarah his wife. What led to this? Here’s what happened.
On the day Isaac was weaned, Sarah caught Ishmael the son of Hagar mocking instead of celebrating with them (Genesis 21:8-11). That sight instantly gave Sarah a strong perception that Ishmael couldn’t live under the same roof with Isaac who was far younger than him. He could harm him because he didn’t love him. What Sarah perceived is exactly what’s playing out between all the Arab nations and Israel today: they hate Israel with a perfect hatred. Just look how they’re rejoicing Online over the recent tragic wildfires in Israel.
When Sarah told Abraham to drive out Hagar and Ishmael, Abraham would have none of it. It was then God stepped in and told him to hearken to the voice of Sarah because she was right. The lesson here is that Spouses should learn to listen to each other’s voice because God’s voice might be coming through it.
For instance, I heard of a wife who told her husband not to go to town but stay back so they’d be together since that particular day was public holiday but he refused. While he was bathing, the wife locked the entrance door to the house and hid the key so he’d stay home. When he’d finished dressing up and got to the door and met it locked, he demanded for the key. The wife SUBMITTED TO HIM and humbly gave him the key and he got into his car and drove off. Sadly, he didn’t get to where he was headed. He had a very ghastly accident and died instantly. God’s voice was coming through his wife but he didn’t recognize it!
So, Spouses, learn to also listen to each other and check if God’s voice is sounding through your Mate.
But for God’s intervention, Abraham would have missed the voice of God that came through Sarah to save Isaac, the Son of promise.
Therefore, Spouses should have listening ears that are tuned heavenward to GOD and wisely tuned to each other.
