WHEN we try to make marriage what God didn’t intend, we have a problem.
Many marriages aren’t working just because the Spouses or one of them sees the union as what it’s not.
Marriage is not a trade union, a secretariat or a shopping mall. Neither is it a bank, an industrial complex or a farm.
Marriage is a love garden where a naked man and a naked woman live together to function as romantic and sexual lovers.
It’s the lack of practicing marriage this way that drives many Spouses into infidelity; even though it’s blatantly wrong.
Sir/Ma, you and your Spouse are to be like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Their beautiful story in Genesis 2 is given to us, so we would emulate the kind of love life they lived before the Fall.
How did they live before the fall? Here’s just a bit of it:
1) HEARTS FULL OF GRATITUDE
They were both grateful and happy to be gifted with each other. This is evidenced by Adam’s spontaneous and joyous response after God presented Eve to him. His speech in Genesis 2:23 shows how ecstatic he was while Eve’s warm silence shows that she was also grateful for the gift of a husband.
Similarly, be happy and grateful that God gave you a Spouse. Recognize and be conscious of the fact that you’re no longer alone. Be grateful like Jacob who remembered how he passed over Jordan 20 years earlier all alone with his staff in his hand but was returning as a company of
people(Genesis 32:10).
Be daily grateful that you’re married and your union will be a happy one.
2) THEY SAW THEMSELVES AS ONE
In his Genesis 2:23 speech, Adam declared Eve as his flesh and bones and as someone created from him. Eve didn’t oppose what he said, showing she believed the same truth.
Walk in their footsteps. Constantly carry in you, a strong consciousness of the fact that you’re one with your spouse. It will deepen your love and loyalty to each other.
3) THEY WERE NOT SHY OR ASHAMED
We’re told in Genesis 2:25 that they were both naked and were not ashamed.
Perhaps, you’re one of the couples that badly need this point.
Adam and Eve were completely free from the hangup called shame. Neither were they afflicted with inferiority complex. They were constantly aware that they were the very image of the Most High God. Being completely free from shyness and shame they looked closely at each other, saw, touched, tasted, smelled and felt each other’s body freely.
Break loose from shame today. And feel absolutely free with each other’s body.
As you can see in our anchor scripture, marriage makes spouses ONE FLESH. So feel absolutely with each other’s body.
4) THEY HAD NO CUSTOM AND CULTURE TO RESTRICT THEM
This couple were directly under God and so should you if you want your union to be continually sweet.
Because they were free from man-made rules, each of them was free to start romantic and sexual activity.
When ever Eve desired to kiss Adam, she didn’t say, “Please Sir, may I kiss you?” No ! What did she do? She simply reached out her hands, held him and pulled him into her embrace and the cycle of romance commenced. Someone may say, “But that would not be a submissive conduct for a wife.” My dear please, listen. Submission does not come into the matter of eating, drinking, bathing, brushing teeth and answering the call of nature.
Sexual desire is one of the calls of nature. When a wife “hears” this call in her feelings, she is free to take hold of her husband and have her need met. Submission does not come in here.
As a couple, be like Adam and Eve whose “chemistries” were at work all the time and their force of attraction always strong because it was not tied down with the chains of taboos.
