THE SCRIPTURE MAKES IT CLEAR that God never gives a bad gift. This means: if God gave you a gift, then that gift is both GOOD AND PERFECT, just as His Word says.
The thing, however, is: for most gifts, you will first see the rubbish around them before you will encounter the precious rubies they carry; and that’s why it’s your responsibility, to patiently keep walking in love with your Mate, until the treasures in them begin to ooze forth!
Even the Orange you buy must first be peeled before you can enjoy it’s tasty juice. The Coconut must be carefully broken and a knife used to remove the edible part before you can enjoy it. Your child must be taken care of for years before it grows to the age when you can ask him to run small errands for you within the house. The count goes on and on. It’s an error to expect an “Expert Spouse” from your Mate who’s just ten or fifteen years old in marriage. You must both give each other time to grow. You must also be prepared to help each other grow into a much better personality than they are today.
Perhaps, you’ve heard the true-life story of a female Lawyer who consented to marry a Carpenter because God said she should do so.
Well, after they became man and wife, she requested him to allow her teach him O’Level subjects to which he humbly consented. She gradually homeschooled him and he wrote and passed his West African School Certificate Exams. Long story short, she kept teaching him until he went on to the university and got his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees! He didn’t stop there. He crowned it all with a hard-earned PhD!
Dearly Beloved, your Spouse isn’t the “good-for-nothing” liability the devil has told you that they are.
Your Mate is a blessing from God. Yes, they may not look like the “Dream Spouse” you earnestly longed and prayed for; but as you love them genuinely and encourage them, God will through you and others, make them all that you want them to be, and much more. There’s no man beyond God’s making.
In marriage, Spouses are to serve as “Saviours” to each other. God has elected to use you in raising your mate! Make yourself happily available for Him to use.
When you see the Spouses of your friends and neighbours who seem so successful, never be fooled to believe that they’ve always been so! They were once on the backside of the desert.
When you watch a plane fly majestically in the sky, remember that it was first designed, constructed and assembled. It didn’t just begin flying. So also is your Spouse. God is silently constructing them. Be patient.
Keep loving, respecting, and investing in them. That’s your role. God is quietly playing His own roles. It’s a matter of time and He will launch forth your man or woman for the whole world to see. And then, your marriage will become an inspiration to thousands, if not millions!
