HAS IT EVER OCCURED TO YOU that almost all the gifts that God gives first require some work done or preparations made before they can be enjoyed?

If you receive a big bag of rice as gift you would be happy because you know how much it costs in the market today. But you also know that you can’t scoop some of those grains into a plate and start chewing them raw because you’re very hungry. Your liberal benefactor did his best but IT’S YOUR DUTY TO DO THE REST. That’s why it’s said that Marriage involves responsibilities. When God blesses you with a husband or wife, you have the responsibility of making them enjoyable for yourself. No one can do that for you. Now, let’s get back to our “Rice Story”.

To enjoy the rice you were graciously given, you must cook each meal of it you’ll take. That entails going through all the cooking processes until it’s done and ready to serve. You cannot enjoy your rice in the raw form. The same goes for most of the good things of life that you get. The Orange must be pealed before you can enjoy the tasty juice. Cassava must be processed into Garri or flour form to be eaten as food. Your goat must be killed, carefully cut in pieces and cooked or else you can’t eat it. So also must you invest Love in diverse forms in the life of your mate to find them lovely, friendly, pleasant and a delight to live with.

When you wake up in the morning and want your husband or wife to be sweet and enjoyable to you that day, do the needful. So what should you do? Sweeten them! Begin it all in the place of prayer. Not necessarily a long prayer, though. Make supplications and entreaties for them that God would help them to be sweet and strong all through the day. Pray that earth’s souring agents don’t perch on them as the day runs. Pray God to keep them from frustrations and exasperation, so they don’t transfer any aggressions to “innocent you” when they return home.

Next and more importantly, sweeten them by your behaviour, attitude and loving actions towards them. Reach out and touch their hearts tenderly with what they truly love and cherish.

When Queen Esther could not reach her husband because he was fenced off from her by tradition, culture and imperial laws, she didn’t throw up her hands in despair and bemoan her fate for being married to a “difficult and inaccessible husband.” She knew there’s always a way. She took the divine route. Yes, she smartly entered the spiritual highway of FASTING. She knew that he loved choice wines and so went on to set a rich banquet of wine before him. Doesn’t this sound unusual? Yes, it does. You see, when you spend time in God’s presence talking to Him on how to go about your marital challenges, He’ll give you brilliant ideas that will work wonders for you. That’s what happened with Esther. After two banquets of wine, she sensed that it was time to tell her husband her request. She did and God took over: Haman the Agagite went on to commit the biggest blunder of his life by lying down on the bed where Esther sat in the name of begging for mercy. This ignited the fury and jealousy of the King who was already angry. The King read Haman’s “pleading position” on the bed as an attempt to rape his wife in his presence. What could anger any red-blooded man more?

Don’t wait for your marriage to become sweet “some day in the future.” That’s like waiting for your rice in the bag to turn sumptuous without the cooking process. You’ll wait in vain.

“Cook, sweeten and flavour” your spouse EVERYDAY if you want to enjoy them. Esther knew that her husband loved rich and high quality wines and spent her money to give him TWO BANQUETS OF WINE! You can do something similar for your spouse. What does your husband like very much? Could you plan, prepare and get it for him as a gift? What does your wife enjoy and cherish so much as a woman? Don’t wait for her birthday or your marriage anniversary. Get it for her today or soonest or as soon as you can afford it. Go out of your way to make each other happy on daily basis and your marriage, home and family will be a peaceful and joyful one. Enough of crisis, tensions and quarrels.

Some of you are rich enough to take your wife to Dubai for a holiday. What are you waiting for? Even if don’t want to travel out of your country, you could find some good and safe place not too far away from where you live and take your wife there and “spoil her a little”. It will enrich your marriage in no small way. After all, she’s your one and only heavenly-licenced Girl-Friend and deserves it.

In conclusion, when you wake up in the morning,
(1) See your spouse as being “raw” and needing to be “cooked, sweetened and flavoured” for the day, so you could enjoy them.
(2) Do practical acts of love for your spouse; deeds that will generate favour, trust and goodwill for you in their heart.
(3) Demonstrate godliness in your interactions with them all throughout the day. Be courteous, polite, respectful, sincere, civil, merciful, gracious, generous, kind, compassionate and tender hearted. Be magnanimous and forgiving. As you do, your mate will be sweetened and it will show in their behaviour and attitude towards you because what you give will always come back to you in “good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over” proportions. (Like 6:38)
