AS WE SAW IN THE OPENING PARAGRAPH of yesterday’s devotional piece, your Marriage becomes a daily thrill or celebration when you and your Spouse relate with each other according to the whole counsel of God on Marriage.

Today, we’re considering the commands for husbands and wives that are in our anchor scripture space.

Dearly Beloved Spouses, there’s no way you’ll obey these commands and your home still be a wilderness of chaos. Never! Instead, your Marriage and Home will become fresh, lush and green like Eden, the Garden of the Lord.

In Colossians 3: 18, we read: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.” Wives are to submit to the authority of their husbands as the Head of the family. That verse goes on to say that Submission to her husband as therein demanded is the proper conduct that’s fitting for the believing woman who’s married. Infact, Ephesians 5: 23 spells out the kind of submission God’s asking Wives to give to their husbands:

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, AS UNTO THE LORD.”
The wife is to give her husband the same kind of reverential submission she give to God! So, God is in effect saying: “SUBMIT TO YOUR HUSBAND AS TOTALLY AND AS DEEPLY AS YOU SUBMIT TO ME!
Therefore give your beloved husband total submission in all things and see your marriage blossom, thrive and flourish effortlessly. Do yo know why? It’s because there’s no proper husband who’ll receive that quality of submission and not respect and cherish the wife in return.

Unfortunately, many wives feel uneasy with the Submission command. Well, you just need to understand a few things and your fears will be gone.

Firstly, it’s not your husband who gave the “Submission Command”. God did. So your obedience or otherwise is to Him. God will be happy to see you HONOUR HIM with your obedience.

Secondly, you need to know that God is your Father and would not ask you to do what will turn you into a slave in your marriage and home. Trust God. Have confidence in Him as a good God that will never give unrighteous laws. When you understand that God meant well in commanding you, His beautiful and cherished daughter, to give your husband reverential submission, you’ll be at rest in your mind that obedience to this command will not harm you.

Now, let’s look at Colossians 3:19, the second verse in our anchor scripture. Here Husbands are commanded to LOVE THEIR WIVES AND NEVER BE BITTER AGAINST THEM.

A look at Ephesians 5:25-29 shows us that the kind of Love God is asking Husbands to show to their wives is not superficial and shallow love but deep, profound, supreme and self sacrificing Love.

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the Church”.

Some Christian Husbands may look at the command to love their wife supremely as too difficult to keep but it isn’t. You know why? Because God has already poured out His Love in your heart to enable you joyfully love your wife as He has commanded:

“And hope does not make us ashamed, because THE LOVE OF GOD HAS BEEN POURED OUT INTO OUR HEARTS THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT, the One having been given to us.”(Romans 8: BLB)

With the Love of poured out into our hearts, WE ARE ALL WELL EQUIPPED to successfully live out God’s commandments on Marriage and enjoy thrilling unions that will make our homes sweet colonies of Heaven on Earth!
