ARE YOU A HUSBAND OR A WIFE? Watch your heart; mind what comes into your mind.
From the Beginning, the whole world knew marriage as a monogamous institution. But suddenly a man by name Lamech was inflamed with unbridled lust and began Polygamy(Genesis 4: 19).
Today, that erroneous form of marriage has come to stay; complete with the attendant internal rivalry, hatred and physical and diabolical fights it generates amongst the competing wives.
Solomon wrote the beautiful Song of Songs, an inspired musical work that portrays the beauty of romantic love in a monogamous Marriage. Then the unexpected happened: Solomon was soon filled with a fierce and raging appetite for women of diverse shapes, colours and sizes. He went on to marry 700 wives and 300 concubines; making nonsense of his love life, his Song of Songs, his earlier marriage and his family life.
In the New Testament era, the Church appointed Deacons among whom were Stephen and Nicholas. Church history holds that Nicholas, one of the ordained Deacons later swerved off the path of godliness and embraced a strange and heretic belief; whereby he left sleeping with his very beautiful wife and allowed other men to enjoy her. His group known as the Nicolaitanes promoted the belief and practice of all the male members sleeping with each other’s wife. It was a community of wives belonging to all the men in the group. This is the sect that Jesus declared his hatred for in the book of Revelation:
“But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.”(Revelation 2:6)
“So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.”(Revelation 2:15)
What’s the lesson for us in all these? It’s this: if these men were deceived and derailed from the path of godly marriage, it’s a warning for us to be careful lest our hearts are deceived by lust, modernity or wealth to deviate from the form of marriage that God instituted in the beginning: a covenant union of one man and one woman for life until death separates them.
