MARRIAGE: USING JOSEPH’S ADULTERY CONQUERING METHODS (PT. 2)

Scripture:
‘FLEE FORNICATION.’
(1 CORINTHIANS 6: 18A)

WHEN YOU COMPARE JOSEPH’S RESPONSE to Mrs Potiphar’s invitation to sleep with her and David’s reaction to the sight of naked and bathing Bathsheba,

you’ll see two men whose behaviour completely differed in the face of deadly sexual temptations.

While Joseph was irritated, averse and vehement in his stance against Adultery, David rather leaned towards “the satanic offer”, sending messages to enquire about the identity of the woman and inviting her over to his palace IN THE NIGHT even though he had been clearly told that she was married! With Joseph we see evident antagonism, revulsion and opposition towards Adultery while with David we see LUST unbridled; leading to a chain of Sins and the divine judgement they attracted to him and his family.

From these two men and their reaction in the face of sexual temptation, we can learn that: Victory or Defeat when faced with the temptation to infidelity depends on your RESPONSE and not even on the magnitude of the temptation.

The Word of God is very clear on what our attitude and response should be when we’re faced with temptation to infidelity and immorality in general. It’s not to linger in the environment of the temptation, which was the beginning of David’s woe. As soon as he sighted the woman bathing, King David should have turned and ran downstairs to his family. Let’s see some Scriptures that confirm this step as what to do to be victorious over sexual temptations.

(1) “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. AND, LET EVERY ONE THAT NAMETH THE NAME OF CHRIST DEPART FROM INIQUITY.”

(1 Timothy 2:19)

In the scripture above, we’re commanded what to do when we come face to face with Sin. We’re to DEPART!!! Just like Light and Darkness do not dwell together, so should we not stand shoulder to shoulder with evil.

When you’re faced with sexual sin, DEPART FROM THAT PERSON, DEPART FROM THAT PLACE AND DEPART FROM THAT DEAL OR BUSINESS: even if it means embarrassing someone . Potiphar’s wife definitely found the refusal of her own Slave(Joseph)to sleep with her embarrassing but Joseph didn’t mind: he embarrassed her all the same. Pleasing God comes first.

2) “FLEE FORNICATION. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.”(2 Corinthians 6:18)

In the Scripture verse above, FLEEING is commanded as the step to take in the face of sexual temptation. This is what Joseph did: he left his dress in the hands of Mrs Potiphar and ran with his legs. When a man or woman is luring you into Adultery, don’t stand there to prove anything. RUN FOR YOUR DEAR LIFE!

(3) “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, ABSTAIN FROM FLESHLY LUSTS WHICH WAR AGAINST THE SOUL”

(1 Peter 2:11)

We have at least two important things to learn from the scripture above. Firstly, we are to ABSTAIN FROM ADULTERY AND ALL OTHER SEXUAL LUSTS. To abstain is to refrain, renounce and shun something; and have nothing to do with it. And that’s what our attitude should be towards Adultery all the time and everywhere.

Secondly, this verse let’s us know that sexual sins aren’t “forbidden fruit” or forbidden pleasure, as people call them. THEY ARE ALL-OUT WAR LAUNCHED TO DESTROY YOUR SOUL.

Sexual temptations are therefore not to be treated with kid gloves. They’re to be hated and fought against vehemently.

That man or woman tempting you with Adultery is sent to kill you spiritually and possibly physically too. Therefore RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
