DEMONSTRATE MATURITY AND SELF-CONTROL IN ALL THINGS
🍇In our devotional teaching for yesterday, we saw among other things that right from the Beginning, marriage has been a relationship of matured and full-grown people. This being so, Spouses are required to demonstrate maturity and self-control in all aspects of their lives together as a couple.
We also saw that this involves sacrificing their genuine marital rights when necessary.
THE TELEVISION BREAKER!
🍇I once read of a marriage where the husband got angry whenever his wife denied him of his bedroom rights and he would break things. He even broke their television on one such occasion.
This kind of crude and primitive conduct over denial of matrimonial rights is not just immature and childish but reprehensible to say the least.
Many reading about the “Television Breaker” above would laugh at him but his behaviour isn’t uncommon. It’s the same kind of anger that makes others get a “side-chick”, get a “sugar boy”, watch pornography and other sinful options because of sexual denial at home. They’re as wrong as the man who childishly broke his television over sexual denial.
Dearly Beloved, God is teaching us in this current devotional series that Maturity and Temperance are what spouses should hold unto when circumstances don’t allow the fulfillment of their sexual desires.
FROM ANCIENT TIMES COUPLES HAVE PRACTICED MATURITY AND SELF-CONTROL
🍇Right from ancient times, there had always been occasions when matrimonial harmony were disrupted and conjugal rights had to be suddenly given up.
For instance, wars often broke out without prior warnings and the men in Israel had to suddenly leave their wives and children and head to the battlefields. The only people exempted were the honeymooning newly married couples.
Those men on the battlefields stayed in celibacy and abstention, sometimes for a year until the battle was over and then they returned home to enjoy their marital rights again.
And how about their wives left behind at home? They also had to bravely endure and exercise self-control until their husbands returned.
Such unexpected separation and abstention made reunion so sweet and so rich; making their marriage relationships new; and stronger and more knit together than ever.
TEMPERANCE A MUST FOR ALL BELIEVERS
🍇As a born again Christian, temperance isn’t just something you need to practice in marriage, God commands that you have it in your life as a Believer. It must be part of your vital spiritual kits. Please, read:
“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge TEMPERANCE”(2 Peter 1:5-6a)
NEW TESTAMENT SOLDIERS
🍇And just like all the men in ancient Israel were soldiers, so also are all Believers in Christ spiritual soldiers today. And as spiritual soldiers, we are commanded to be people who can endure hardness. This “hardness” includes the absence of certain basic comforts such as matrimonial intimacy when necessity constrains us to stay without them for a season.
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”(2 Timothy 2:3)
THE GRACE OF GOD IS FULLY SUFFICIENT
🍇Some may wonder if they could cope with such a circumstance. Yes, you can cope because God’s GRACE is already within you to enable you cope! God’s grace will teach you how to ably and triumphantly live above worldly lusts and the dictates of the flesh. Read:
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world”(Titus 2:11-12)
BE OPENLY KNOWN FOR SELF-CONTROL
🍇Our anchor scripture tells us to ensure that our self-control is something so established that it is public knowledge. God demands this because He knows that He has already furnished us with His GRACE to live victoriously. It’s just as He said to Apostles Paul: “My Grace is sufficient for you”(2 Corinthians 12:9)
Maturity and Temperance are fundamental to our spiritual and matrimonial lives. Therefore make them your focus. Walk in them and you’ll enjoy better, richer and fuller spiritual and matrimonial lives as a couple.
