ONE OF THE DUTIES OF THE MINISTER of God’s Word is to, from time to time, remind God’s flock entrusted to his care, of those things they have been taught in the past. Why? Because as human beings, they have the tendency to forget vital facts, information and doctrines they’d been taught.
In a neighbourhood where I once lived, there erupted a fierce fight one night between a man and his wife. Since it was dead in the night, I didn’t deem it necessary to step into the darkness on a peace making mission. Well, after a while, the contention died down and everybody returned to sleep.
The next morning, the old woman who served as house help to the fighting couple resumed work and was promptly informed of the previous night’s duel. As she sat down with the couple’s little baby on her laps, she said in vernacular: “Eeeh, On’Ibo! Oya we ke hii, edu ta kpa yi?” It means, “Ha, Mr On’Ibo! How could you beat and punch the wife you make love to?”
Hearing her remarks from a distance, I laughed quietly because it was both obscene and witty but nevertheless carried a message.
Why do Spouses during moments of argument quickly forget who they are to each other and the unquantifiable loads of blessings they’ve brought into one another’s life? Why would a husband, in a fit of anger, slap the beautiful and rosy cheeks of his wife that he sincerely admired and lovingly kissed just some hours ago?
Why would a husband see a scantily dressed Student Prostitute, alias Slay Queen, AND FEEL DRAWN TO HER and even start a relationship with her, rent her a beautiful three bedroom apartment in town, all the while forgetting the healthy, robust, beautiful, virtuous and God-fearing career woman that’s his wife, with whom he started life and who has helped him attain his present economic status? Stupid Forgetfulness!
Why would a housewife run into her former fiance who used and dumped her and now happily reconnect with him, exchange phone numbers, become Facebook friends with him and even start meeting him secretly on weekends in hotels, while the husband and kids are all there, everyone of them doting on her and trusting her as a good woman, most especially her husband? And then one day, she and her clandestine lover are caught red-handed by the friends of the husband and their naked video all over the internet. Meanwhile, it’s her husband who lifted her from the dust, trained her through University and married her, wiping the tears from eyes after the other man jilted her. And now the dog has returned to it’s vomit. What caused it? Stupid forgetfulness! The kind of forgetfulness that makes the one who harbours it A BIG FOOL!
The Ministry of the Preacher as a REMINDER becomes extremely important because its needed to keep the flock from the harms of the various kinds of Forgetfulness. The flock need to be reminded again and again of the Word of God so that they don’t walk into traps, pits and snares that have been set by the enemy. And that’s why it’s important that every Church have a Marriage Seminar or Marriage Summit, at least once every four months.
Today, you’re going to be reminded of who your Spouse is to you and vice versa. We’re focusing on who the wife is to her husband.
So who is your spouse to you, according to God’s Word?
(1) HUSBANDS
Your wife is a divinely created and appointed HELPER, graciously given to you by God Almighty(Genesis 2:18). You’re to therefore, love, appreciate, esteem and honour her. That’s the appropriate attitude, conduct and behaviour God expects from you and not to despise, mistreat and beat her.
Your wife is “a good thing” and an embodiment of God’s favour towards you. You don’t tread FAVOUR under foot, do you? How should you treat FAVOUR? You hold it close to your heart, right? That’s how you should hold your wife: close to your heart always! (Proverbs 18: 22)
Your wife is YOUR VERY BODY!(Ephesians 5:25-29). You daily love, cherish, feed, bath, groom, dress up, protect, give rest and sleep to your body, isn’t it? Do all these to your wife everyday!
Your wife is your FLESH, BLOOD AND BONES. Do you ever tear at your flesh or cut your flesh with a razor blade or a knife so blood would flow? Never! If you NEVER harm your body, NEVER HURT YOUR WIFE! If you’re constantly mindful of all these, you’ll not mistreat your dear wife. You’ll instead love, cherish, nourish and celebrate her ceaselessly.
Tomorrow, we shall be looking at who the husband is to his wife.
