๐ฉท๐๐๐Yesterday, a fellow minister sent me a short video of an African couple in North America who fought each other ferociously in broad daylight.
If this brutish act had been done in their bedroom, it would have been bad enough. If it had taken place in their sitting room, it would still have been very bad because the sitting room is only a few feet away from the outdoors. But this pair brazenly fought each other outside, under the open sky, with people watching and filming their barbaric and primitive conduct. It was utterly loathsome!
๐ฉท๐๐๐A GREAT ESTATE OF HONOUR
Sir/Ma, marriage is an estate of honour (Hebrews 13:4). The moment you walked down the aisle and said, “I do,” you stepped into the realm of honour and dignity, where maturity, self-control, self-restraint, and discipline are constantly expected of you. Why?
It is because, as a married person, you instantly became an ambassador and representative of many people, families, communities, interests, and even nations.
๐ฉท๐๐๐YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR
As a married person, you are an ambassador and representative of your parents and the family from which you came. When you perform acts that are noble and laudable, your parents and family are praised and given the credit.
But when you have gone through college, earned degrees, endured the rigours of obtaining the necessary travel documents, relocated to a foreign nation, and then end up fighting in broad daylight without the least consideration for decorum or what people will say (not to mention what God will say), you have, by such an act, not only disgraced yourselves but also humiliated your parents, brought reproach upon your nation and profession, and stamped your names with odium.
๐ฉท๐๐๐BE DISCIPLINED AT ALL COSTS
From nursery and primary school, the importance of discipline was daily drummed into you by your caregivers and teachers. You were taught not to make noise in class, to remain in your seat instead of loitering, to stand in line, and to march during morning assemblies. All these were meant to mould you into a person with a sense of boundaries, self-respect, consideration for others, respect for due process, and reverence for constituted authority.
Overall, you were trained for years in primary and secondary school to become a good and well-behaved citizen. That is why, when you mature and get married, so much is expected of you. This is even more so if you are a member of the body of Christ and profess to be born again. Fighting is the last thing anyone would expect of you. Therefore, when you engage in it, do not blame anyone who feels that you have committed a grave act of self-degradation and brought infamy upon yourself.
๐ฉท๐๐๐GET HOLD OF UNDERSTANDING
Our anchor Scripture declares that when you are in an estate of honour but lack understanding, you are no different from dogs, rams, and other animals that fight. What, then, is understanding? Let us read:
“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.” (Job 28:28 KJV)
Understanding is the ability to consciously and intentionally turn away from sin and evil. Beasts do not possess this capacity. Unfortunately, neither do men and women who have become so morally debased that they descend so low as to exchange heavy blows in broad daylight.
๐ฉท๐๐๐TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
Jesus Christ taught us the spiritual discipline of non-retaliation when He commanded us to turn the other cheek. But did you know that even in our native African culture, there is a similar concept? It is called ลFล in some Nigerian tribes. It is the principle of choosing to let peace reign even when you are right and the other person, who is wrong, is spoiling for a fight.
๐ฉท๐๐๐DISCOVERIES
It is after getting married that you truly get to know who your spouse is. How? By observing their behaviour.
If your spouse is someone who has murdered before, it may become evident in the degree of cruelty and blood-curdling brutality they display in the home. If they do not mind stripping naked on the streets, you may see evidence of it in the extent of their carelessness with their body at home.
When, after getting married, you realise that your spouse cares little about reputation, honour, and a good name, it becomes your responsibility to inwardly restrain yourself from engaging in quarrels with them, lest the disagreement escalate into a fight. When you do so, it is not cowardice; it is wisdom. By exercising such restraint, you will spare yourself many needless embarrassments.
๐ฉท๐๐๐CONCLUSION
Finally, always remember that whenever “something” is urging or nudging you to fight, it is actually a demon seeking to strip you of your life and liberty and push you into prison, where you may ultimately face the gravest consequences.
๐Now, I am not trying to frighten you. I am speaking as an oracle of God according to the grace bestowed upon me by the Holy Spirit.
๐You never truly know the immediate health condition of your spouse because the human body is constantly changing. Your spouse may look bulky and appear strong but may actually be physically vulnerable. A single punch may be all it takes to trigger a heart attack or cause a fall that results in their head striking a hard object, leading to death. The law may then hold you responsible, convict you of manslaughter, and impose the appropriate legal punishment.
Such tragedies have happened in the past and will continue to happen to spouses who lack understanding and therefore behave like beasts because they feel entitled to uncontrolled anger.
๐You certainly do not want the tragedy of being accused of manslaughter, do you? Then resolve never to fight anyone, regardless of the provocation.
๐Most importantly, repent of your sins and receive Jesus Christ into your heart so that He may give you eternal life and make you a new creature.
๐Never, ever, fight your spouse again!๐
